um,  I'm still learning the MT models too, "If it has Buttons all across the "Dash"... it's an 806".... but what about a 608?

Gansky, whom according to your profile is a Victorian era hold over at a polished age of 149,  my recent 107S model has the "automatic" button.  I tried looking for a cancel button so it would pop out, but no good.  I tried pushing on the Automatic button several times in a row, thinking there was like a double click thing and that would cause it to deselect.  NO.  I even tried taking the screws off the back panel, removing it and with a screw driver, PUSHING the back side of the button to deselect it.  That didn't work either !

I've come to two conclusions:

Either the button is stuck down in the Automatic position, and I need a new one,

OR

the wringer attachment is broken or someone has removed it.  I'm even considering that it could be a manufacturers defect, but.....  I don't know if Whirlpool will cover this, even with an extended warranty.

In your experience, what is usually the problem here?

The "Automatic" button is simply an infill for the hole in the control panel.  It is not a switch, it does not move (neither in nor out), it does nothing.  Your machine is a 1-speed model and that was Maytag's way of using their standard control panel while not really needing that third opening.
