Went to the laundromat yesterday...

had a king sized comforter that needed washed that doesn't fit in my whirlpool toploader. well this particular laundromat uses all maytag machines. they only had 3 front loaders with 2 of them out of order...lol. the front loaders just said maytag commercial "triple wash". there was not one top loader in the place cuz the rest of them were maytag neptunes, probly about 20 of them...one of them was out of order. i kinda like the design of those commercial neptunes...how well do the neptunes hold up? how good is there perfomance?

I have the very last of the Maytag Neptunes...

Mine is badged as an Amana Enlighten. I love this washer! The fabric softener doesn't work very well as it gets gunked up quickly... Other than that it's a very fun washer! LOUD during the spin cycle! (Which I like) It holds a ton, uses a very good amount of water and performs very well!

NO...I have one of the REAL Neptunes....actually 2.....they wash very well, use plenty of water as needed, self cleans itself, washes kingsize comforters with ease, my first set is 12 years old, bearings just starting to make a little noise...other than that, no issues from washer or dryer...

How well do the neptunes hold up? As well as the consumer ones. I would say that they are ok considering that the commercial ones get used far more than the consumer ones. Wash is ok, can't stand the tub tilt, and you can't see what it's doing. Lots of parts around, tub bearings easy to replace. I think early ones had issues with motor and control board, but I think that's been fixed. Heavy machines though.

so is a neptune considered a "he" machine? or do they use quite a bit of water?

They are an "he" machine, particularly when they were new on the market.

I remember this washer from on old episode of "This Old House" with Bob Vila. They were talking about how efficient they were back in the day.

Wow, 4 of those. For people with multiple washers, how are you connecting hoses? Just spliting them with "Y" adapters...or are you using some other type of configuration (like trough drains, etc) - similar to laundromats?

I thought MAYTAG got really lousy after the late 80s, were these machines built to last?

the first set i got for my husband as a house warming gift, May 1998, never an issue, there is a slight scratch sound which means I will have to do bearrings sometime this year, the other set I got off Craigslist for 200.00, it needed bearrings, a simple job, and quieter than new...both dryes are gas....the connection for water, I took off the valve and installed a "T", and then put on 2 valves, they both drain into a laundry tub, and because I have a sewage ejection system for the basement, and have to trap the lint thru a screen....theres also a set of valves under the sink for a test station

these machines are HE but don't skimp on water needed for thorough cleaning results....these digital machines have a built in rinse sequence to clean the machine on it's own....never a mold/mildew issue and I keep the doors closed
when not in use

looking for another set as a spare backup if needed
