I just got back from New Orleans to see what our old house looks like after being flooded by Hurricane Katrina. Saying that it's a complete disaster doesn't even do it justice. The furniture was all over the place, the entire floor was covered in mud and some water. The kitchen stunk horribly from the rotten food. The refrigerator was laying down on the floor because it floated. All my stuff in the back room, records, tapes, video tapes, toys from childhood were trashed. The only things that could be saved were the stuff that was up high, like dishes, cups, pots, pans, some of the pictures. My grandpa's house had roof damage and the ceiling collapsed. Everything's totalled including cars and stuff. Good thing we evacuated.

I did grab all of my DVDs and some of my cds because those can be saved. You can wash them clean and they will work perfectly once clean.

Some parts of the city looked like a nuclear bomb went off. Some of the houses were just flattened and roofs tore off.

Jason:

I am so sorry about your devastating loss! I am glad that you and the folks are in a new abode, though! I know some of the memorabilia can't be replaced, but you have your family; and that's what counts!

Jason,
I am glad that you all are safe, and starting a new life.
It really suck that you lost so much stuff! I am sure that in many way's that you are heart broken.
I wish you and your family the best for the future. Thanks for sharing your experence.

I saved Melmac.

Yup. I trudged through a foot of mud with rubber boots to get to the Melmac and the Tupperware. The Tupperware was under alot of funk so I only got a few little bowls. The Melmac was up high so they were only wet. I'll wash them through the DW on the longest cycle, hottest setting and they should come out. I couldn't save the coca-cola glasses :-( because I couldn't find them in the muck.

Let it be know that the first DVD I salvaged from the muck was The Beatles: Anthology. If there had to be a first one to come from the muck, Let It Be the Beatles.

Stuff can be replaced...

Yeah its a PITA, big time. But we are more happy that YOU and your family escaped...
I KNOW what an inconvenience this can be. I hope for better things in the future for you! :-)

Best wishes,
Maytagmom/Carol

PS: Beatle rawk! I have the same CD. Hint: if any of your CD's are scratched up, don't trash them. Smear a little dab of peanut butter on them, with something really soft, old t-shirt what have you, go with the grooves (in circles, wipe off...it REALLY works!

I've heard of the peanut butter trick but kinda doubted it. They're all in the cases (most of them) and perfect. I treat my music, tv shows and movies like precious gold. And they will be lovingly restored back to their glory. How can you not want to rescue The Partridge Family, The Brady Bunch, Speed Racer, Alf, The Beatles On Ed Sullivan, and the list goes on.

Oh, Jason. I'm so very sorry for you loss, but I'm glad you are safe.

Let us know if there's anything that we can do.

Mike
