Please tell me what contributed to the end of Maytag. I can imagine that reworking the Neptunes had something to do with it. I liked their washers, even the the last ones.
In my experience at least the Neptune is a great washer-with a couple nits...
I bought mine,a'98 3000,in need of repair about 2009:had classic wax motor/blown control board problem. This problem was heat pellet of wax motor getting damp it it's position right over the door,120v flashing over edge of heat pellet and blowing triac on PC board. The fix on my Neptune involved taking apart the wax motor, insulating the heat pellet, replacing the blown triac .Been going great since Washer would sometimes crease new, stiff jeans and also the original belt will make a scritch noise at times when tumble switches direction.Early Neptunes used a "switched reluctance"drive motor that makes kind of a soft groaning noise during tumble then a glorious "UFO liftoff"sound during spin runup A classic from the '90s.
I agree that the Neptunes were great machines. I had the ones with the touch screen like this set (dryer was a bit taller and it was gas). Mine unfortunately didn't last for very long but if I had gotten my set fixed, I would've likely still had them today. My grandfather also had one as well, his was a stackable electric model with the mechanical board. It was still going fine (minus the burnt lint inside the dryer) until his cabin flooded last year and it accidentally got thrown away. If I'm going to be honest, I'd certainly buy a Neptune today over what Whirlpool is selling now.
