Why is it when Kitchen Aid came out with the 18 series in 1976 that the upper level power wash( middle wash arm) was so short in width, not even getting close to the corners? Thoughts or theories?
What WERE they thinking?

I might add that the Hobart KAs were far and away the BEST in terms of durability, yet I still wonder about this. I hope you KitchenAid aficianados are around for the answer. Also,were the 19 series as bad as many thought? At least they went to the wide arm. However,WHY would they heat the prewash to 150 instead of the main wash?
i personally don't think they were bad
i think any kitchenaid 20 series and older is a great machine! once they went with the reversing motor they lost my interest.
i can't say why that upper spray arm was shorter, maybe someone here knows. i do have a bunch of kitchenaids, 2 of which are 19 series, and they have the same pump and motor as the 18 and 20's so i think they are wonderful. in my brochures for the 19 series it does say the initial water is heated to help bring the tub and everything in it up to temp for the rest of the wash cycle. my only complaint about the 19 models is that they had no heated dry but that's a minor flaw in my book. they still outwash anything on the market today i feel!
ofcourse i'm prob not a good one to comment as i really only truly love the 17 and older models and i know most people disagree with me on that. i just love the simplicity of the single hydrosweep spray arm at the bottom of the tub. the 17 is my all time favorite.

My family had the kds19 for 25 years. It was a great machine. Yes it was a mistake that they took out the drying heater. But if you used the jetdry it would be fine. I do feel that they should have worked it where the water should have been heated in the main wash instead of the prewash. In the 19 series the final rinse water was also heated to 150 to componsite for the no heat drying. They were still great machines and nothing like them are built today.

Was it so they did not have to re-architect the upper rack with the "dipped" sides...if they put in the full-width spray arm they would lose too much height on the edges, plus they changed to the big plates instead of going down the middle to them going down the left side. I think it was a height problem.

I'm not so sure it's due to the rack dip since the 19 upper rack is the same aas far as I know.
