What's Wrong With My Vintage(?) Seltzer Bottle?

The last couple of times I tried to use it, after charging it up it shot a stream across the room.  This initial burst uses up all of the carbonation, and what remains is nearly flat.  It's like the valve has an all-or-nothing hair trigger, yet when the assembly has been taken apart, the valve works smoothly. 

 

Any ideas on what would cause this overly pressurized situation?  A bad batch of cartridges maybe?  This bottle has been reliable for several years and it's a nice piece that I'd like to continue using.

Are you .....

filling the bottle to the top with water before putting the valve back on? Don't leave any air in the bottle is the key. Then charge with CO2.

If you leave any air space in the bottle before charging, the CO2 doesn't go into solution and simply fills the air space in the bottle. Doing so then equates to one big messy squirt of water and air .... and the remaining water is flat. Make sure to top the bottle off with water! Leave no air space in the bottle, then charge.

Hmmm.  My old bottle did NOT want the water level above a certain level.  I would gently rock it to get the carbonation into the water.  Have not used it i some time.  Bought a soda stream and quit suing it too, now just buy carbonated water at Kroger - last week took back 80+ cans from the last month or so.

 

Quit the soda stream due to the high cost of the carts, but got a lead on a refill service in Sarnia, $8-10/bottle

I understand the logic behind no air space, but like Matt's, there's a fill line on mine. 

 

I usually chill the water first.  Last night I didn't because I was giving a demo.  Needless to say, my friend who said he wanted one was not all all impressed, except with the distance the thing could shoot.

Interesting system.  I've never seen a bottle that didn't have a fill line.  The ad copy seems to suggest that the fill-to-the-top method eliminates spurts.  Considering what my bottle does, that's putting it mildly.

 

I noticed though, that the bottle in the video is NLA.

Did you use the tube?  My unit has a white plastic inert that directs the CO2 into the water , much like the one in the video.  Mine is a white solid aluminum 1lt. bottle.

Matt, I think my bottle is too old to have ever had a tube insert.
