Which Magazine Feb 07 Washer Reports UK Machines

I have just subscribed to the Which Magazine, for the washing machine report! They have tested 77 of the UK models available, and the results are really interesting.
Their best buys for 2007 were:

All the Miele models they tested
All the LG models they tested
A Tricity Bendix model
A large capacaity Bosch
A Beko model (!)
A Zanussi model

The machine they are saying to avoid
The Hotpoint Aqualtis (i have one of these.....)
An Indesit Machine

Let me know if you have a specific model that you want info on and ill copy and paste the report for you all onto this site

Zanussi Report......

they didnt have the model you wanted, so i have copied two that might be similar to yours
1)ZWF1437
"The large 7kg drum on this Best Buy means you can wash roughly six small towels, two pillow cases, 14 t-shirts, two sheets, three pairs of jeans and 14 socks.

This Zanussi-Electrolux machine cleans well on cotton, easy-care and short programs. Its 1400rpm spin speed should save time and energy, as it removes more water from your clothes, reducing tumble drying time. It also lowers drying time on the washing line.

Extra programs include a delay start option and a handwash program. However, the handwash cycle was real let down - it didn't clean well and it shrunk the handwash only items we washed.

Rinsing isn’t on a par with other Best Buys and adding an extra rinse to a wash cycle does increase detergent removal, but overall rinsing is poor.

Water and energy consumption are low making this model cheap to run. The control panel is simple to use and Zanussi-Electrolux have average reliability in our latest survey.

Pros: Good cleaning, Good feedback during washes, Cheap to run, Easy to use.

Cons: Poor rinsing, Noisy."

2) ZWF1451
"This Zanussi-Electrolux Best Buy is packed full of useful features and provides a great cotton wash, and good cleaning across the board.

Extra programs include easy-iron, wool, handwash and extra rinse. The clever memory function can be set to remember your favourite programs, so that you can call them up quickly and easily.

We liked the large user-friendly monitor that shows the actual end time of a wash rather than just the number of minutes remaining in a cycle.

This machine has an AAB energy efficiency rating. Zanussi-Electrolux’s brand reliability is average.

Available in white.

Pros: Excellent cotton wash. Memory function. Large display.

Cons: Slow cotton wash. Poor rinsing"

Aqualtis

Hi Rob, getting on OK with the machine, dont know why Which said it was the worst on test! how are you finding yours? here is their write up (it scored 31%)
"From the Aqualtis range, this model has a large 7.5kg drum capacity. However, we weren't impressed by this model’s cleaning. Both cotton and easy care programs are poor.

It comes in white with a choice of door colour – ice or silver. The large distinctive door on the Aqualtis range opens like a book and as result the detergent drawer is hidden. This produces a clean and smooth feel. Other plus points include child proof lock for the control panel and electronic display which shows wash progress and time remaining.

The handwash program was one of the best we’ve tested. Rinsing is poor, but if you have sensitive skin you can add an extra rinse. We found this boosted detergent removal to an acceptable level. Generally energy and water use is low, but small objects such as loose coins tended to disappear in the machine. This could cause problems – if they rust they may taint pale wash loads, or if they get caught in the wrong place they may even damage the machine.

In our annual survey Hotpoint has poor reliability.

Pros: Electronic display, 7.5kg drum capacity, Child lock, clean design

Cons: Poor brand reliability, Poor cleaning"

Which on Maytag

Hi there

Has Which reviewed the Maytag-Asko European style front loaders - the Adamas 1800 spin range and so forth - if they have I wonder how they rated them?

i've always been un-sure of the which reports i noticed that on one of the hotpoint machines it said that using the extra rinse button it used an extra 48 litres of water which may be true but i find hard to believe, i have the hotpoint WT865A and its standard for it to only rinse twice and the extra rinse just adds in a third which i thought was only around 14 litres.
I would like to know however if some of bosch are best buys how much extra water do they use with the new "aqua plus" selected, or are these models with this option still to be tested?
Does the wash times they have stated for the aqualtis match? or are they basing everything on using the time saver button?

Which? test using the standard cycles, and then do a test on the quick wash cycle as well. They don't test using the EU graded cycles, but using the commonest used cycles - hence 40* cotton cycles rather than 60* etc.

I don't see any Beko rated as a best buy, not on the online version anyway.

The 48 litre thing could have been a typo from 18, or it could be that whatever machine it was used an extra 48 litres in topping up other rinses and adding extra ones.

They've not tested any Maytag-Asko washers yet, but have tested the dryers and dishwashers. I don't think they were terribly impressed.

UK Maytag (Asko) Dishwasher

When my parents were looking for a new dishwasher, they looked at the Maytag and were alarmed at the plastic control panel flexing as you opened the door. I saw it too. It really was shoddy quality.

I gather that the Merloni brother that owns Servis also owns Asko...'nuff said...!

bosch models/hotpoint rinses

Hi there, i also dont believe that a extra rinse uses 48 litres of water -the whole cycle on my aqualtis uses 70!! must be a miss print

the large capacity bosch, WFX2868 and the WFR2869 all got best busys... let me know if u want more info

I have been impressed with the attention that Which has paid, over the decades, to the rinsing ability of washers. Going back 30 years, they were saying that, often about the whole batch of machines that they tested.

Thanks for typing that up for me. It's a shame the Aqualtis got such a bad review, I quite like mine. I will say however, that it could do with an extra rinse and because it fills up so deep (especially on shirts) that you do have to add extra detergent because it dilutes too much.
