Whirlpool 24 inch heat pump, clothes dryers

Eugene and his father-in-law drove down from Cleveland this past Wednesday and brought us 14 whirlpool heat pump dryers and four of the matching washers.

He also brought the avocado GE Versatronic range that I had rescued from Wisconsin that Kenny found last fall.

He took back with him the extra GE Partío cart and a couple compact refrigerators.

These whirlpool 24 inch heat pump dryers only draw 4.1 A, they seem to work well we tested one out yesterday, they were made in France.

You could actually operate six of these on the same circuit that is normal dryer operates on there so efficient.

Curiosity

I think it is inevitable to ask you where have you found 14 driers and four washers, combo52 / John.

And even if you are a professional repairman, I am wondering if you plan to resell them (well, I assume you do not have that much laundry to do...).

I just hope you don't mind me asking.

We will definitely sell. A lot of them may keep two or three for some collector friends, John Charles is taking one back to Massachusetts, along with the bendix gryomatic.

These dryers are about six years old half of them have never even been used. The others were used very lightly, whirlpool has discontinued this product we only ever saw a few of them in the field.

Apparently a nursing home bought these and didn’t use them. Maybe they didn’t suit their purposes who knows, but they basically were hauled away for scrap.

I always like to say that people complain about government waste, but private industry is no match when you look at how much stuff is wasted in this world these were basically about to be sent to the crusher.

I wonder if Whirlpool will ever offer a 29” top filter heat pump model. Might be possible to fit a small heat pump where the burner assembly is on the gas models. Definitely would be cool to see a basic dryer that’s a heat pump design and has the top mount lint filter. There probably would have to be a lower access panel installed to allow ease of cleaning and service of the heat pump system.

Yes, I stored the remaining one I have at my neighbors house a block away, I should try to pull it out and use it.

We had a lot of fun cooking on that when it was down at my friend Jeff‘s house, but once he filled in the swimming pool, nobody ever came over there again, and there was just no point in having it so I brought it back to Beltsville

With the two rotisseries you could put two chickens on it or a pork and a lamb roast.

I was often cooking a big vegetable casserole in the oven and boiling corn on the cob on the top of the stove. It’s a great all-around entertainment device.

With the side boards, there’s space for a blender and making drinks, etc.

One time we were cooking away and we were hit with one of our summer downpours, and it didn’t affect it at all, so I just left the food on top and the food in the oven. The thing is well designed in case it gets wet nothing shorted out.

Apparently early on WP offered these compact 24" heat pump dryers in both 120v and 240v configurations. Both initial offerings were discontinued and replaced with newer models.

Main gripes by some owners of WP heat pump dryers have to do with build quality, that one or more filters cannot be removed for total cleaning, etc.. Then of course you have those that simply want more than what any heat pump dryer can do with current technology. You're not going to get say huge load of towels hot and bone dry in under one hour.

WP has a long history of building laundry appliances in Europe and or using technology from there for products to be sold in USA.

Unlike Maytag who flew blind for their Neptune washers Whirlpool turned to European technology and manufacturing (since 1980 WP has owned Bauknecht) for their "Duet" front loaders. Designed and built in Germany (IIRC) a place that knew a few things about front loading washers WP had far less bother with Duet than Maytag did with Neptune.

These HP dryers (and likely matching washers) probably were purchased for resident laundry. This either done by residents themselves and or staff. Some clever sales person probably over sold the dryers and when put into use nursing home found them more bother than they were worth.

It would be one thing for a private household to wait nearly two hours or so for a dryer to complete a load, in a multi person setting that could get old fast. Washers probably finished long before dryers so what happens then?

Whirlpool currently has a heat pump and a hybrid heat pump. Front load models on their website that was released with the last generation of front loaders period 4 or 5 years ago.
