Why did Whirlpool change the heater style on their power clean dishwashers? Was it because of the tube in the back to the upper spray arm? Was there a difference in the heater wattage or were both the same- just the shape different?

Me too, my understanding is that Whirlpool heaters were a higher wattage. Its a shame Whirlpool shut them down after the thermal hold. GE did the right thing and let them run the whole main wash.

Me too, I am wonder that as well. All the variants fascinate me. I'd like to know the wet draw wattage of PC heaters so I can compute how many degrees per minute any particular element raises a given water charge. Right now I've got my concept PC final rinse set to 30 minutes, I want my final rinse water piping hot!

Jerome, what do you think? Light wash cycle. I hope I can hit 180*F. 30 minute dry would be a bit to much LOL.

Wiring Diagram

Forgot to attach it. Here is the wiring diagram that goes with the cycle chart to make sense of it all. Trying to pick a PTC heater wattage thats just right. 2.25 gallon water charge.

Yes. They decided to refresh the upper sump and heating element of the power cleans in the later years of the 90s because they wanted to offer both a tower style feed as well as models with direct feed which was a brand new style for the powercleans. Whirlpool decided it was best to keep the floor and sump of both machines exactly the same to make manufacturing easier, like using the same sump, same heating element ect. Only difference between the tower style and direct feed style is the pump outlet cover and the water distribution pieces for the specific style so if one wanted to both styles can be converted to the opposite.

When they decided to offer a direct feed, they had to change the heating element layout to accommodate a plastic tube running from behind the sump up to the back wall, so yes that’s correct.
