Whirlpool Duet Steam electric dryer 9400 model

I found this dryer a few weeks ago. It looked new and rarely used. When I turned it on, there was no heat. I bought the correct heating element and it worked fine. Now,you hear the thermostat click as you turn the dryer on but, no heat. It's happened more then once and puzzles me. If the thermostat was bad, why would it work a few loads then take a dump??. The part I replaced was guaranteed good for a year but,the day I went to remove it,it worked fine.. Now, it's not coming on. You hear the click for it to get hot but,no heat. Everything else is o.k. The washer works o.k. but has spin speed issues. I think they (Whirlpool) have each cycle pre programmed regarding their final spin speed. I had the cycle set on Whitest whites with a 1400 rpm final spin but,it went no faster than 1000 rpm . The other issue was that the finsl spin cycle should,like my LGs always do, sense the balance,increase the spin rpm a minute,then spin the rest increasing until the high spin speed selected is reached or stop to redistribute for a better balance. The Duet I have now will have the best balanced huge load tjen take a crap and stop,redistribute and spin OFF BALANCE NOW to about a thousand rpms and finish witjout increasing to the spin speed selected. It's a 9400 Steam with fan fresh 4.5 cu ft. capacity. Not real pleased at all with either one. Lots of you like the Duets better then LG but ,from my own use,care, and maintenance on mine, the LGs are far better then any Whirlpool Duet or Maytag Bravo. I feel sorry for the suckers Lowes sold this $4500 nightmare set too . I bet they weren't replaced with a Whirlpool.

I'll try to post a pic of part of the manual; and, are there any codes?

 

Most problems are loose connections (ribbon cables) at the interface, or at the heater itself, OR the thermistor.

 

Go to section 4.1, for a diagram, then to 6.1 for the trouble shooting sequence.

No error codes. You set the cycle and options,press the start button and everything comes on except the heater. This had a burned out element and the casing it is in was so burned out and brittle. My theory is the previous location had its vent hose going up the roof and caused the dryer to overheat and burn out. I replaced the element and it worked fine for a few loads. Then it stopped heating. No matter what cycle you set it for. No heat. After a couple of days, I went to see if there might be a lose wire I might have missed but ,when I turned it on,the heater lit up again. That was a week ago. I did at least seven loads afterword and decided it may have recycled or something. So, I put the access panel back on and washed three loads earlier. The first was set for steam to get wrinkles out of some seasonal clothing. After that was done, I put a load of blankets almost dry out of the washer in, set the cue and turned the dryer on. After an hour, I went to check and everything was cold and a bit damp. I removed the panel again ,set tbe cycle and no heat again. I'll check again for a loose wire but it could be the thermo. I didn't get it when I got the element. Works great otherwise.

Stepped Spin

On my Whirlpool Duet, it went through a stepped final spin. I want to say it was three stage. Spinning low, then fluffing the load, then spin medium, then fluff, then the final high spin. Not sure if it is a routine that is for wrinkle protection or logic that a lighter load is easier to balance and ramp to high speed.

As for not reaching the target spin speed, perhaps it just timed out during the balance routines.

This is one of the things I really hate about Whirlpool. Same Issue. Even if the load is balanced it "fixes" it and spins off balance with excessive vibration which is apparently balanced to it. Our Whirlpool Duet has done this from day one, weirdly enough, this rarely happens when washing large comforters.

Now, I'm wondering if,like their stingy hot water usage,they pre set the spin speeds on each cycle. When I use heavy duty or bulky,it works but not with whiter whites. I tried.the test mode and it shows no problem. Everything worked like it's supposed to except the element.

Hey Chuck,

 

Did I understand you that all tests were OK, and that the element (Heat Coil) doens't work?

 

Remove the controller on the side, and look for any heat marks/discoloration.

Looking for the 2 large wires that supply 240 to coil circuit thru thermistor.

 

Any defects there would indicate temp/loose connections and intermittent function.

Too bad not another board to try>>

 

Time to make a midnight run to your favorite salvage yard, you know, with a tool or two..!

So, earlier today,as I was doing housework,I threw in a large load of dog blankets and set the Duet.bb washer on Bulky Items with hot/cold and extra rinses. After it was done, I, knowing it probably wouldn't work, decided to plug the dryer back in - and look at the underside where the element is . This time, it came, on and dried the six blankets took 24 minutes !!!!!
So, I decided to do a load of Jims work clothes. As the washing went on, I was cleaning the patio where the wash house is and saw the element was not on. I removed and hung the load, unplugged the dryer and told Jim what was up.
I turned off the braker and back on again ,plugged the dryer back in and heard a click but no power . Theddryer was dead. I remembered tbe same thing happening weeks ago with my LG and assumed it was from a faulty element ordering one to replace it. I looked at the plug and noticed it has been burned. I plugged it back in,raised up on the plug as it was in tight and the damned outlet is bad. The ohm meter didn't show it but both plugs from either dryer were uck fupped. So, a new dryer outlet, two new dryer cords and let's see what will happen. I'll keep you all posted. Aloha.

But in all fairness, it happened to me too...

 

My whirlpool 29 incher quit a few years ago...woudn't start.

Nothing appeared wrong.

After all, determined I had no power at the plug.

Called my friend, electrician, told him to fix, I didn't have time.

He checked everything, and it all worked!

 

Later that day, stopped again...I took apart the receptacle cover, and wow, one leg of the 220 spring clamp was Fried beyond belief.

 

New Receptacle, and its been Okie Dokie!

ANYBODY than take $135 bucks and an old Duet Pair, and Sell Them for $1800...Wow,

I also had the same problem with my LG dryer. So,Jim has an oam meter and tested the dryer outlet. Sure enough, it needed replacement. Now, the dryer is running sweet!!!! I've already dried seven loads and every cycle worked fine. I'll clean the bodies with some compound to remove the marks from the plastic wrap and put them up for sale on CL. I have two LGs ( washers ) ready to pick up at Smith's. One of which has the square window. Not aware of the problems yet. However,neither have baring issues. Oh the fun of diagnostics.
