Well the Whirlpool direct-drive top-loaing washers have a part called the drive coupler. This part breaks every 5-years on average. It happened on my family's Kenmore branded one. But after we replaced it, we discoverd a seized motor and thus curbed the washer. This happened just last May. The washer was only 5-years old and died prematurely. So, Rest In Peace in that big laundry room in the sky (sniff).

Did your motor become seized afterwards? Mine did. Do you happen to know why that happend to me?

Usually the drive coupler breaks because the machine was overloaded on a regular basis, at least that's what we were told by the service tech when we had our coupler replaced about 10 years ago. We were washing a queen sized comforter in ours every few weeks. The serviceman told us to take those to the coin op and wash them there. We did and have had no further problems with the washer or the dryer. These are 1993 models.

I think stating that couplers break every 5 years is an exaggeration. My grandmother's Design2000 never had the coupler break in the probably 14 years she had it. My parents' 1994 KA broke late last year (or was it early this year?) for the first time, approx 13 years. My 1992 KA broke the coupler sometime in early 2004, about 12 years.

dynaflow, the model number tells the year the particular series was released to the market. The serial number tells the year and month/week of manufacture. Tell us those two pieces of info and somebody should be able to answer.

Hey DADoeS, what did your mother do with the Design2000 washer & dryer after you gave her your old Fisher & Paykel ones?

FunGuy, it's my grandmother who had the Design 2000, not my mother. And it's my KitchenAid pair, not the F&Ps, that were swapped to her in 1999 when the Design 2000 left. The Design 2000 was sold, as was her 1972 Whirly dryer, to different buyers.
