Don’t we all seem to know someone who has a refrigerator that has gone through multiple compressors early in life? Someone I know recently bought a new Frigidaire whose compressor maybe lasted 90 days.
I consider myself fortunate that my four freezers and refrigerators have never had a compressor failure. I believe that the 1954 CROSLEY has a Delco compressor. My 2005 Kitchenaid has an Embraco unit, and it is still original. I don’t immediately recall what compressors are in my Absocold refrigerator or my 2007 CROSLEY freezer.
My father, who worked for Hotpoint, remarked that Sanyo compressors were often used with good result. My Mother-in-Law’s Amana from the 1970s still hums nicely to this day with its Panasonic compressor.
And so I was thinking, if my main Kitchenaid lost its compressor today would I fix it or buy a new unit? The problem is, what brand is using what compressor?
Is Whirlpool still using Embraco?
Does anyone know who Haier/GE uses as a compressor supplier?
And does Frigidaire use LG compressors? I ask this as a friend’s new unit tanked quickly.
My biases are showing, but I would not want to buy any unit using a compressor with an astronomical mortality rate. And I wouldn’t trust any sales staff on the floor to actually know what brand of compressor is used in that particular model. To be fair, sometimes part vendors vary so it may not be known unless one looks at the body of the compressor.
Whew. The basic question is: To the best of your knowledge, what compressor is likely used in what brand at this time?

My last Frigidaire fridge and our current Frigidaire upright freezer both have Panasonics . I'm assuming our current LG fridge has an LG linear compressor. It's absolutely silent. The Panasonic one in the freezer and the one that was in the fridge made normal compressor noises when running.

Which compressors are best today?

It’s possible that everything has changed since the change to R600 refrigerant.

We have seen a bunch of Frigidaire refrigerators where the compressors have locked up with the new refrigerant, don’t know if this is going to cause problems or not. In general compressors have not given much trouble over the past 30-40 years with the exception of LG and their linear compressor and Samsung has had their share of compressor failures as well.

So I’m not sure that there’s any way to really predict the best compressor in a new refrigerator today if you have an older refrigerator with an R134 refrigerant it’s not hard to find good compressors that work with that.

Fridge compressors...

Most of what I've seen in today's systems are generic Chinese compressors. I've got one in a dead dehumidifier that doesn't even have a name on it! Long gone are the days whenever Panasonic, Tecumseh, Embraco, and Copeland were the norm.
