I've noticed CARE INSTRUCTIONS labels on a few items I've bought like bath mats that say not to use fabric softener. Why???

Got some slacks from Bean a few years ago and the tag said softener would affect the fabric's performance. I don't remember if it was repelling stains or wrinkles. As the slacks are older now, I don't bother to rinse them separately and they still do what they are supposed to do which is hide my nudidity.

I haven't ever seen problems with FS and my towels. My towels are dark blue and get washed with other dark items like jeans, shirts, socks, etc. I use warm water, a good detergent, and ammonia. I assume that this removes the previous dose of FS along with dirt and stains.
I imagine that most people who have problem with their towels wash in cold water and use way too much FS.

I have Perma-press shirts that also say not to use Fabric softener. I thought it might have to with the perma-press function, perhaps changing the properties in some way.
If the bathmats are rubber backed the fabric softener may cause the ruber backing to deteriorate.

I add a very small amount of FS to bath towel loads; haven't had a problem with absorbancy from that.
