WP Getting Hit Hard By Global Turmoil

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Whirlpool is to big for their own good.

And of course sails are going up in North America now that a monopoly exists. GE has always been chintzy and Electrolux mediocre, so Whirlpool is the only thing worth buying if you are a homeowner. If you are a builder its GE or Frigidaire.

Not sure why their over seas market is going down. Is it economy alone?

Whirlpool's sales in the North America are just fine, in fact are quite healthy. It is in Brazil, Russia, the Middle East and other places suffering poor economies that are the problems.

Brazil is going down the tubes. Russia and the Middle East are dealing with economic woes caused by the price of oil falling off a cliff. All this going on while the USD was surging against foreign currencies making not only WP's products more expensive abroad but those funds take a hit when converted back to dollars and brought home.

And not forgeting

The Buyout from hell with bells on - Indesit Company !!

"Whirlpool's COO Marc Bitzer pointed to Russia and the United Kingdom as specific drags on Whirlpool's European sales in a call to analysts.

Whether this is as part of a direct impact of the recent tumble dryer safety notice debacle we do not know but we expect that this didn’t help but it has reportedly impacted sales. Whilst this is being viewed as a temporary issue, Which? reported recently that the modification program being undertaken on these tumble dryers could take over three years to complete."

Is Brazil in recession?

It wasn't just a short time ago.
I saw an older youtube video of a Counsol WP world washer, and the author called it a Counsol cacca. Cacca means DOO DOO. Their old machine was a blue Braestemp belt drive wig wag WP that was still working.

Overseas....

Of course, cannot speak for the whole of overseas, but in terms of the UK, the reason they are not selling is because they barely have anything on sale.

Looking at 2 of our major retailers, which Id say a good 50% of shoppers would go if buying a new appliance, whirlpool have:

1 (yes one) washing machine

NONE - Fridges, freezers, dishwashers, tumble dryers and cookers.

Got to admit, there have never been really all that many WP appliances on sale, but what I have just seen is silly.

Incidentally, had WP washing machine earlier this year, stunning to look at, and packed with features, however, mechanically it was junk, ended up having 2 of them, both had issues with build ended up getting a Samsung (which to be fair, their machines aren't all that either).

A.  Market volatility is WHY companies try and diversify in different regions and countries.  When one region is generating income, another region may be stalled.  Check back in 12 months and the numbers may be reversed.  The big picture however for the company would show constant income growth.  Consider how much worse things would be if they were only invested in one region.

B. They write the story as if for the drama.... OF THE MOMENT.

The stock is among the worst performers on the S&P 500 <span style="text-decoration: underline;">on the day</span>, though it remains up nearly 20% this year.</span>"</span>

Launderess

You're not wrong.

Brazil is also under a huge political and economic crisis.

Not as horrible as Venezuela, where people don't have money to buy even toothpaste and the government said it's the toothpaste manufacturers that created a culture of brushing the teeth 3x per day when only once every 2 days is enough only to sell more toothpaste.

Met on Monday with the head of Whirlpool's LGBT Employee Resource Group. Nice guy who's in marketing for Whirlpool selling their water filter products---as he said, people buy a washing machine every ten years--they need to sell things which are more consumable so people come back. They're having cyclical troubles in bigger countries like Brazil, plus the European recession impacted their business. Business cycle is better in the US/North America, though.

One thing is a big trouble for companies in Brazil and Argentina (Markets I know very well because I worked with them:

In the US, the disposability is too high. a defective fill valve or a clogged pump would be enough for most people to simply get rid of the washer and buy a new one.

In Brazil things are much different. Appliances are expensive and people try to fiz them as much as possible. They use them until there's nothing left to be saved.

Up to certain point, some programmed obsolescence is good and required to keep the business health.

But Whirlpool got greedy and launched TOL washers that are worse than the BOL american washers.

The other manufacturers had no other choice than do the same.

Thomas,

TOL, or BOL, WP introduced the same identical drive system in the early 90's in Mexico, Brazil, etc., then the USA on compact washers.
The "world washer" with a Celcon gear belt driven splutch and a reversing motor for agitation.
It is now also on all WP USA large capacity washers of every pricepoint, but is now direct drive, rather than belt driven.
The Fisher&Paykel type design DD rotor stator set up has also been retired.
My 2011 TOL Bravos X now fills with half a tub of water on the normal cycle, which used to be low water use. I use hand wash, which is 1/3 of a tub of water.
If I select high spin, it may or may not spin on high.
I will not be repairing it, but will use it until it quits altogether.
Bearings and seals and gearcase were replaced winter 2014 under warranty.
It's getting louder again already. I average about 6 to 7 small to medium loads per week.
Bottom line, no appliance is made to last today like 20 years ago. At least not many parts used in them.
Recyclability seems to be the "energy star" rating compliance.
I am having better service from the dryer though.
