Okay, still workin on the Maytag Wringer and I am making progress. The next issue is the Wringer tension. It won't stay! I apply the tension and it'll sit for a second or 2 then pop! I can't put anything through the wringer without holding the tension bar in place! What do I do?

Strange ...

Jamie ... Did you look in the repair manual I sent? There is a spring underneath the wringer cap that could be "sprung" or not seating properly.

Maytag's wringers were unique in that you didn't adjust the tension; it was "automatic". When rollers wore out, you could buy (still can, I think) oversized roller hangers to add additional pressure.

Just go through the wringer cap slowly; it's a learning process!! :-) The service manual will walk you through it.

They say that "patience is a virtue". :-)

Jamie ... could be.

Do you have any lithium grease? It's white and somewhat water repellent.

Have you figured out how to lift the wringer cap off? You might want to make sure you have lithium grease on all the parts under the wringer cap. Sometimes, with enough use and hot water, the lithium from the factory wears off.

You can put it on the latches, too. Don't overdo, because you don't want any to fall off onto your clean clothes!!

I usually take the cap completely apart and re-grease everything. The spring is a little "tricky" to get back in; but you seem mechanically adept. Just follow the manual.

Let us know ...

No, I haven't yet solved the problem. Unfortunately, problem after problem after problem has been showing up, so I gave up. If anyone wants it...please feel free to come and get it. Although have given up, my best friend who bought me that one, found another that is in much better conditon. The only problem I see are that it has a leak (think I solved that with my other best friend: silicone.) It is a later one so it has the pressure pedal for the Wringer that is busted (pedal cracked), and the wringer rollers squeak when they wring things. Other than that it runs, it doesn't need much paint, and it keeps the tension. Those are the most important features to have working.

Jamie ... the pressure pedal is no problem. You can disconnect it by unscrewing the entire unit from the wringer post; just by the right angle drive. If you tip the machine over, take off the wringer head and tip the machine forward, laying it on the front side of the machine where the agitator start is. You can then easily see the right angle drive and look just above it to where the pressure pedal screws into the base of the wringer post. Replace the pressure pedal with a 3/8" (I think) bolt you can get at the hardware store. Just screw it in where the pressure pedal used to go ... don't make it go flush with the machine, just screw it in 1/4" to 1/2". This will depress the clutch and will permanently leave it "open" so the rollers turn.

Use lithium grease on both the upper and lower roller stems.

The manual will show you where to apply it.

Hope this helps ...

More clarification ...

Jamie ... was a little tired last night when I typed the last post; sorry!

I meant to tell you to use lithium grease on the wringer rollers to stop the squeaking. You just apply it to the roller stems and lithium is somewhat waterproof, so it lasts a long time.
