I just came from Tide's website. It looks like they're once again offering Tide Free HE. (I need to use free and clear detergents and have no option but to use coin operated Neptunes.) (I've been using Sear Plus Ultra Free of Dyes and Perfumes, but that doesn't dissolve very well in colder weather during the "Bright Colors" (cold wash) cycle.) I hope that Tide Free HE isn't pulled from the market again. It had a very short life the last time around. I had sent Tide an e-mail asking where I could find it and they suggested that I contact my favorite retailer and ask them to carry it. I did just that. A customer representative from Kings (a New Jersey supermarket chain) tried in vain to find some information about it. She was eventually told that there is no such thing as Tide Free HE! Talk about embarassing. (The form e-mail that I got in response to my scathing e-mail to Tide didn't say much of anything.) I eventually was able to buy two bottles at Target. It was the last two bottles they had. I think that I'll try Target again. I don't want to send Kings on another quest for a short lived product. (I hope not. I'm sure that I'm not the only consumer who uses High Efficiency washers and whose skin doesn't tolerate the dyes and fragrances in detergents and fabric softener, etc.)

Re: Using Coin-Op Laundry:

Hi! Mike, isn't it possible that you could look into a small Portable Washer and Dryer, like the WP/Kenmore Models, that are on Wheels and Hook-Up the Washer like a Portable Dishwasher, to a Kitchen Sink Faucet?

If you couldn't Vent the Dryer out any Windows, you could put a Nylon Stocking on the end of the Vent Opening, to collect any extra Lint that the Lint Screen might not catch.

This would certainly save you a lot of Money, compared to going to a Laundromat. They might have a somewhat smaller Capacity, but the ones I've owned in the Past, actually were able to Wash quite a lot all at once. I've even Washed a
Full-Size Set of Sheets and the Pillow Cases and even some smaller items, like some Hand Towels and Wash Clothes, or a few Polo-Shirts.

Good Luck with your Search for Tide HE Free, Steve

Mike,

Just noticed you are in New Jersey! Tide HE Free liquid is all over Manhattan shops, in both the 100oz and smaller size.
K-Mart on 8th Street along with most chain shops like Food Emporium, Associated Food Stores and even Gristiedes carries it as well. If you really have a hard time finding Tide Free, please let me know, will send you whatever is wanting via UPS.

What one could do is ask the manger of our local Food Emporium to let me have several already packed as a case. Double box the case and ship it out that way. If you wish will also keep an eye out for when Tide goes on sale here, that way you could save a few dollars.

Mike - Tide HE Free has never left the shelves here in Connecticut either. Both Shaw's and Stop&Shop have carried it since it came on the market. Funny how certain products are so intermittently available.

I did notice yesterday that there is now an All Free/Clear in a HE version at Stop&Shop. It is the small and mighty version. You may also want to look for that. The regular All Free/Clear is supposed to be low sudsing - I had checked with Unilever and was told that with the exception of the Liquids that were once branded Surf, the regular All liquids were all low sudsing and the HE versions were non sudsing. However unless HE is noted on the bottle, the small & mighty versions were regular sudsing.

Unfortunately, Steve, it's not worth the risk. Washers, dryers, and dishwashers are all prohibited by my lease. Every once in a while, someone puts a note by the mailboxes complaining about suds from an "illegal" washing machine backing up into their apartment. (Usually from the toilet, my kitchen shares plumbing lines with the bathroom in the apartment next door and that's true of almost every aparment in the building.) That note is always followed by a notice from the rental office stating that all apartments in a certain "line" (I live in the "H line" for example) are going to be searched for the offending appliance. These apartments aren't that big, so there would be no way to hide them and it would be a hassle to have to keep moving the appliance to say a friend's house everytime one of those notices appeared. (Moving them in and out of the building would also increase the risk of getting caught.)(Management has the right to enter your apartment without permission under certain conditions that are specified in the lease and I suppose that they can get a court order if you refuse.) The notice also alway includes the omninous warning that the owner of the illegal appliances will be evicted. They've never lost an eviction case and I do know someone who was evicted for the crime of owning a washer. I live in a rent controlled apartment. Rents in my area average $1,500 for a similarly sized apartment. I can't afford to move, unfortunately. (Sigh)

It's interesting to know that Tide Free HE never left the shelves in places like CT and New York. I sometimes shop at the K-Mart on 8th Street and at the Associated that's on Fulton Street, by the South Street Seaport. Thanks, I'll have to look for it in one of those stores. I'll also have to look for All Free HE. Thank you for letting me know about that. It's really odd that, at least until yesterday, Tide Free HE wasn't listed on their website. (It had been there when it was first introduced.) Kings' customer service rep. forwarded the e-mail from Tide saying that Tide HE was only available in two versions -- regular scent and mountain spring. Some distributors must have had a very large supply of it. That's the only explanation that I can think of as to why it never disappeared from some stores.

Thanks again, everyone.

Mike

I have the same problem

Mike,

I also look for Tide Free HE for the same reason that you do. (I own a Neptune but will use regular Tide powder if I have to and it works fine). I live in Central MA and find it intermittently on the shelves at different stores. Unfortunately hard to find here also. I stock up when I can. I've asked why and have been told that it doesn't sell well. I've been in retail and know that shelf space is at a premium when there are so many options availalbe. Good luck finding some!

Land of the Free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Mike,
I am now left wondering if New Jersey is actually in the U.S.A. or is it part of Stalin's Russia? I just cannot believe that you are prohibited from owning a washing machine, mind you I sometimes think Australia is not much better.
This reminds me of an incident here last year when the State Government stopped Sydney City Council going to court to prevent a particular development which would have cost a certain privately owned bank a fortune(this particular bank donates large sums of money to the political party in power).
The day before the council were to go to court, the State Government gazetted an order sacking the council.
The relevant minister actually went to the State Governor's private family home at 5.30 in the morning demanding she sign the order sacking the council.
so much for democracy huh?
Cheers.
Steve.
