You Tube: I Washed My Clothes With 60 Year Old Detergent in A 40 Year Old Washer

A guy at a furniture store washed a load of jeans in an early 1970s vintage solid tub Speed Queen with 60-Year Old Tide Detergent; it was a full cycle. He showed the results and seemed to know what he was talking about.

He has a series of related videos, including a "ketchup test" (to gauge the effectiveness of the old Tide. (He stated, in subject video mentioned here, that he'll compre the results with those using a Tide pod.

Vintage Detergent Test

The towel that was washed with the new Tide Pod looked cleaner.

 

I think cleaning would have been much better with the vintage if package directions had been followed.

1 1/2 cups of detergent for heavy soil

Hot water wash for whites.

Also washer should have had at least 50% more clothing in tub for better washing friction.

3/4 cup of LCB should have been added around the last 5 minutes of wash cycle.

 

If these steps had been taken towel would be white again.

 

The good news is you got about the  same poor result with the new Tide pod which is much better for the environment than the old phosphate Tide.

How long ago did they make Tide no longer usable on dishes?

According to the P&G website, Tide added enzymes in 1968, so this test would have been Tide with phosphates but no enzymes.

 

It would be interesting to add a third test, using Tide from the 70s/80s that had both phosphates and enzymes.

Eugene has stated on other ketchup-test videos that the point is not to get the towel 100% clean.  The point is to have a standard washing "recipe" carried across various machines to compare the mechanics of how well a given machine can perform.

In the case of old vs. new detergent comparisons using a specific machine, however, the detergent is the variable factor but the rest of the "recipe" is his standard.

He does underload on the ketchup tests.

I’m glad you liked the videos, I had fun making them. I was really surprised that the old soap was only a tiny bit better than new. I thought the difference would be more dramatic.

I’ll be putting out more old detergent videos soon , I have some regular wash videos to do and I’ll circle back to it.

Have been using "old" detergents and soaps for years

In aid of using up my rather comprehensive stash.

So far everything from Dash, to Cold Power have performed rather well. As did FAB, P&G Laundry Soap etc, Persil 59, Persil original soap powder, etc...

Old Detergent

I wonder how the detergent chemicals would be broken down after 60 or 70 years? If this was stored in a card board box moisture, air, ect might change the chemical compound.
