The problem with that magnetic gizmo is that it will only work if the exhaust hole and wall hole pretty much line up. If they don't line up, you can still use it, but the vent run will take up 4" of space between the dryer and the wall.

I worked on plenty of these back in the day. There was a large solenoid-operated valve in the lower left rear that handled the diversion.
