What about a broken portable? Couldn't you just use the case from a scavenged portable to put an undercounter model in? There isn't much portable selection anymore, but you could build a portable out of the fancy models by just using the old case.

They sure do. It's small, but every part of the construction and drive system of this machine is pure DD Whirlpool. If you've changed a coupler before, it's the same aside from how to open the case.

Believe it or not, but there's a Miele dealer here. It's not one of the usual appliance stores, but a designer kitchen and bath store. We also have a clearance/closeout store that always has Ariston washing machines here.

I already have the worst 24" machine-the dreaded Frigidaire. That makes me hesitant about thinking that the pictured 18" would be better if Frigidaire built it. My current one has a lower spray arm and a tower in the middle- no upper arms at all. It just does a bad job. I know what you mean...
