Before Walmart, Target and Kmart, there was Sage's Complete Shopping

I vaguely remember a magazine cartoon showing a guy in a video store in the "Surround Sound DVDs" section. The "Surround Sound DVDs" banner is peeling away revealing the old "Quadraphonic LPs" sign beneath.

Target in San Bernardino was a FedMart ("America's Greatest General Store").

Yeah, too late to save 'em, though. Maybe they had sent someone to the first West Coast Computer Faire where the Apple II was unveiled, took one look at Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak as well as those milling around their booth and said "Nope. No way."

Before Walmart, Target and Kmart, there was Sage's Complete Shopping

Ah, Circuit City . . . Went to the hiring event for the Circuit City in San Bernardino. Interviewer asks "So, what do you want to sell?" "Personal computers, you know, like Apple." Interviewer leans in and in hushed tones, "Between you and me, we've seen the kind of people who want to own a...

Before Walmart, Target and Kmart, there was Sage's Complete Shopping

Today's The Mega Brands That Built America features the three chains in the subject but not a single mention of regional ahead-of-the-times chains like Sage's Complete Shopping in San Bernardino county. The one in Rialto had a grocery store, a hot foods deli, a coffee shop, jewelry department...

What were your childhood interests in appliances, machinery, etc?

Record players, tape recorders and movie projectors. Something hypnotic about the rotating motion and the mechanics, especially of a record changer.

"The Mega-Brands That Built America": They've GOT to include Kodak and Polaroid

Well, just saw the opening credits and the montage of products included a Polaroid SX-70 camera and a Kodak Instamatic. Remains to be seen if they’re paired in the same episode. Updates as they happen!

    New electric stove

Consider induction… … especially if you can budget $1000 and at least half your cookware is induction compatible. Our Frigidaire has been trouble free and we scored it for $998.00.

    What? No "Touch-N-Cook"?

I stand corrected.   Actually, I'm sitting.  I based my information on the serial number and manufacturing date label.  The stove had the "Designed In, Engineered In, Assembled in AMERICA" label on the oven door.   It just didn't specify which state.

    Good Electric Cooking Burner

Save up a grand . . .   . . . and take the ultimate plunge.  Especially if you're replacing an electric.   Not an affiliate link. No kickback for me. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Frigidaire-30-in-4-Element-Front-Control-Induction-Range-in-Stainless-Steel-with-Air-Fry-FCFI3082BS/333867593

Seven-Segment LED, colors that seem to be in and out of fashion

The definitive bedside drum clock . . .   . . . was the Sankyo Digital 401, even though it lacked a lighted display.  The USA model was driven by a 120V 60Hz AC motor which gave it accuracy that lived up to their slogan "Never a Second Away From the Exact Time".

Seven-Segment LED, colors that seem to be in and out of fashion

Lest we forget . . .   Most split-flap (or flip) clocks and electronic digital clocks from the same era were more accurate than today's retro recreations because the clock motor or timing circuit was controlled by the 60 Hz AC power line frequency, not a crystal oscillator.

    What? No "Touch-N-Cook"?

"Flowing Heat®" sucked.   No, literally.   Instead of using a blower, the dryer had an exhaust fan so the air was "inhaled" over the heat source instead of blown across.  The idea was to disperse the heat more effectively for more uniform drying and less likelihood of high heat setting in...

    What? No "Touch-N-Cook"?

My Frigidaire induction stove. . . . . . was made in Charlotte Province, People’s Republic of North Carolina.
