About cars... Am I THAT old?

I learned to drive stick in a VW. Husband parked it in a field and said "Here ya go!" Damn near gave him wiplash that afternoon. We always bought cars with a stick because the gas mileage was better with a manual transmission. That changed in the 2000s in the US. We were stunned when we needed...

What do you use your Blender for ?

I use my blender for everything from drinks to experimenting with vegan cooking. I have a Vitamix 5000 bought at an estate sale. Upgraded with the smaller container so it fits under the cabinets. It replaced a Vitamix 3600 bought at the scratch and dent sale they used to have at the factory in...

    Vegetable soup

I do many of my soups in the pressure cooker or Instant Pot. This is one of our favorites. It's more of a stew than a soup. Add an additional cup of broth for it to be soupier. This makes enough for two and was adapted from a recipe from the "Recipes for a Small Planet" cookbook. Lentils...

Creeping Up Upon Us - Thanksgiving

My parents are gone now, so no trips to my home for Thankgiving anymore. My in law are still with us. My dear mother in law gave up on Thanksgiving dinner years ago, it got to be too much. She still hosts a family Christmas gathering. We go out to eat with them on Thanksgiving. It used to be...

    Number PULEAZE! Part One:

Funny story about a Pennsylvania Bell installer. My 13th birthday present was a phone in my room. Those were the days when you were allowed to let repair men into the house before your parents were home from work. The Bell man came right after I got home from school. I watched him string the...

Any Cookie Curators to discuss extinct Stella D'oros of yore?

Hydrox cookies are back, and with the original all sugar formula (no high fructose corn syrup). Brought back from the dead by Leaf Brands. Leaf is now suing Modelez (who makes Oreos). Seems that many of the large brands pay for shelf space. And Modelez has their own people come into stores to...

    Let's Talk About Cottage Cheese!

I like cottage cheese. Eat it Pennsylvania Dutch style with some apple butter on top. Most cottage cheese now seems to be full of gums. Daisy is the only brand around here made with just milk, cream and salt. It's quite good.

    August 14, 1945

My Uncles served in the war, in the European theater. Neither ever spoke about their service. Asked my Uncle Lawrence once what he did in the war, he told me "You don't want to know." My Dad was far sighted and had flat feet and was turned down when he tried to enlist. He had a job in a vital...

    Toast-R-Oven Recipe

Thanks! This looks the recipe. I think Mom's regular sized toaster oven came with a booklet with smaller sized recipes. I still have her Corningware petite pan, 1 3/4 cup size which I thought came with that GE toaster oven. Will resize this recipe and give it a go. Good tip on the search terms too

    Toast-R-Oven Recipe

Thanks for the link, I'm still hunting for that mac and cheese recipe. It was really good and knew the recipe by heart as a teenager. Can't remember it now, it's lost in the memory banks somewhere

    Toast-R-Oven Recipe

Does anyone have the manual for a 1970's era Toast-R-Oven that has the recipe for macaroni and cheese? It had a bit of mayonnaise in it. Used to make it and lost the recipe. Would appreciate it if someone could post it for me. Thanks

    Internal Combustion Home Appliances

Air powered appliances Are common in some Amish settlements. They convert appliances to run on pneumatic compressed air motors. Grain mills, KitchenAid mixers, Vitamix blenders etc. They joke that compressed air is "Amish electricity"

Once in a while, I like canned tuna

American Tuna Is the only brand I will buy now. It is line caught albacore tuna processed in the USA. No oil or water added. Just fresh tuna and salt. Comes out of the can in one large chunk. It is delicious! Tastes like the tuna I remember from childhood. Like the canned chicken occasionally...

    Internal Combustion Home Appliances

My Amish neighbors Still use gas powered wringer washers. At one time Lehman's hardware in Kidron Ohio imported a Saudi Arabian made copy of the classic Maytag wringer washer.

    Dehumidifier

Compressorless dehumidifier You may want to consider a compressorless desiccant dehumidifier. After going through a dehumidifier every other year for the past few years I looked into an alternative. Found that these desiccant dehumidifiers are popular the world over. They have a slowly rotating...
