It's fixed. Had a buddy who owns a machine shop mill .125 off the snout of the hub. Put it all back together last night, and have run 3 loads through it without a problem. No leaks, no burned up belts, and runs much quieter. So I can at least sleep better knowing that I got it fixed. The things...

Thanks RepairGuy. I might go get it even if I can't convince the wife against buying new. We have a daughter in college who will need a new washer in the relatively near future.
Question - you mention all the seal issues - did the Speed Queens have the same issues? I see that they went with...
There is a tool available, but some good old fashioned grunt will pull it right off. Might be a good time to clean under there as well. You will be surprised how much sludge can build up under these things.
Repairguy, you are right - the one that is two hours away is in fact older than mine - it is an Amana "Commercial Quality Washer", model# LWA40AL2. I looked up the parts list for it and it uses the better metal/porcelain tub like the Speed Queens. In fact, it looks dead like a Speed Queen in...
I went out to a local appliance retailer who is a SQ dealer. He had one Classic left, but $1200. Whew. He also had the GE Commercial for 900-ish. One interesting one that he had was the GE "commercial grade" unit for $750. I was told this unit has a 5 year parts and labor warranty, which...
Aaaaauuuggghh! And of course, the new hub is not correct either. Looks pretty similar to the other incorrect one I have already - snout that goes down into the seal against the bearing is too tall, and this one takes the stainless sleeve too, although they didn't include it.
I guess I am at...
Are you talking about the clicking sound? I had a similar sound with mine, and it was the idler arm moving back and forth because my belt had a bad spot on it from being burnt. But you said he checked the belt. Maybe the belt is defective and out of balance. A new belt would be a quick and...
I am adding some pictures to demonstrate the differences between the old hub and the new one. Hopefully the one I just ordered will be an exact replacement for the original one.
I may run by the local Habitat store just to see if I get lucky. My issue is that the wife is rapidly losing patience (can't blame her really) and does not trust the idea of buying something used with no warranty. I guess I could try an appliance store that sells refurbs - a lot of those offer...
Shopping for a new washer. I am open to both top loaders and front loaders at this point, and I am mechanically inclined and not afraid to make my own repairs. Looking for a reasonably priced machine that can be expected to go 5-6 years without major repairs like seals, bearings or...
Thanks for the reply! The hub in the kit I bought used a similar seal to the one in the plastic tub model, but smaller in outside diameter. Yeah, I think the spring is to keep contact with the face of the seal on the back of the hub. The hub in the kit I bought had a sleeve that is too tall...
