After driving the same car for 16 years, I bought a new one!

I had several MT cars and loved them. Really a lot more fun. You feel more connected with the car. But an MT in stop and go traffic gets really old, really quickly. No thanks. But it's a moot point, really. If I continue with my present mileage I'll probably have my Cube with its CVT forever.

    "bad"'70s cars that...

In the mid 80's I needed a new car. I test drove a '77 Ford Granada w/302 V8. A little soft for my taste but rock solid and was rather pleasant on the highway, which was most of my driving at the time. I thought about it for a couple hours then called the seller to tell him I'd take it. It was...

    Floor lamps

I have a couple of lamps like that from my grandparents. No alabaster night light in the base, though. Getting them out of storage and fixing them up is one of many things on my to-do list.......

Here we go again, the mantra of washing laundry in cold water

Cold water? Sorry, don't buy it. I still wash everything in HOT. I must have dumbed down washers because even my ice silk Cockcon underwear comes through with no shrinkage or damage.

New GE Top Load Washer Line-Up

Spin speeds, G-force, and drying..... I remember back during the first energy crisis in the 70's one/some manufacturers touted their washer-dryer pairs saved energy because their washers had a higher spin speed so their dryers didn't have to run as long. It sticks in my mind because the wording...

Trying to find a German to Czech Adapter

This sort of stuff draws me in but I don't dare start or I'll spend hours........ #9 I'm only aware of one company called Bel Ami and they deal with entirely different types of plugs and sockets...

If Forced To Choose Only One Modern Major Appliance

If we're talking Kitchen & Laundry... If I had to pick ONE, it'd be a Thor washer/dishwasher combo. I've done the switching several times and it wasn't a problem. I'd just need both the machine and the tub not in use on pedestals high enough that I'd use my shoulders and not my back.

    My New Sewing Machine

I was doing an internship in the costume department of the main theatre at UConn in Storrs (aka 'Snorrs'), Conn. We had to sew a whole bunch of things together. It was all straight line. The it moved on to more complicated stuff which I can't remember. What I DO remember is being at work one...

Something I read online quite often that makes me chuckle

I used to work at The Gap. IIRC, to break in jeans they should be turned inside out, buttoned up, and washed in warm water for the longest cycle. Increasing temps would increase both color fade and shrinkage. Tumble dry low to avoid further shrinkage. For 501 Shrink-to-Fit jeans the...

    Removing blood stains?

My go to is H2O2 and I've found that adding salt helps tremendously. 1. Splash on the hydrogen peroxide. 2. Add enough salt to make a paste. 3. Scrub with an old toothbrush to work the paste into the fabric. 4. Wait until the fizzing stops, rinse, and repeat until stain is gone.

Most & Least Effective Washing Machine Lint Filtration Systems.

My mom's 1967 Kenmore (800?) with a self cleaning filter never left lint on anything. My dog shed an incredible amount of fur for her size and no matter how hair-covered clothing or throw rugs were, the filter got rid of all of it. My own 1996 Maytag with an in-agitator filter worked wonders...

Good-Bye To Gas Kitchen, Hot Water & Heating & Laundry Appliances In NYC

Yes, wind, solar, tidal generators, etc. are the long term solutions. Costs are slowly dropping and efficiency is rising, and battery technology is improving. No argument. My concern is the ageing electric grid, capacity issues and security. And maybe my concerns are unwarranted. If that were...

Always Wanted To Know How To Pronounce "Vernel"

"Squirrel" is supposed to be an extremely difficult animal name to say for speakers of many languages. I can't think of any English words ending in '-e' with the 'e' pronounced even vaguely close to the short 'e' of 'get'. So the 'e' in 'Miele' is extremely difficult because (IMO) the...

    A/C gone bad

#50 Yeah, I'd never rely on a heat pump alone. Although I think a few members here have been rather surprised at how low temps go before backup heat is needed. Can't remember who, though. And yes, insulation first and foremost. And I HATE cold floors so my knee-jerk response is always...

    Vinegar in washer.

Borax, ammonia, and bleach are my go-to's as well. Someone's been a bad influence on me????????? During the height Covid I used a disinfectant in the fabric softener dispenser. When I went back to plain white vinegar I noticed clothes were def a bit softer.
