    My brother got a Samsung

My brother wanted to change his 2013 Whirlpool WTW4800XQ4 washer, which he put aftermarket rods in that quickly failed. It also had loud bearings. He has decided to replace it instead of repair. I mean, replacing both suspension rods and a Gearcase is expensive, so it makes sense that he bought...

    GE Washers Exploding

Yep. Most washers that explode seem to be either GE or Samsung, sometimes LG (but less commonly). Even seen Whirlpool VMAX’s and older Cabrios that have exploded (tho it’s rare). The newer Samsungs do not explode. I’ve never seen a newer Samsung washer explode. The explosions of washers made...

Here are video links of GE top load washers exploding on camera:

    GE Washers Exploding

The Samsungs exploded due to that factor as well. It’s still a thing that shouldn’t happen. I never see it on the basic GE’s nor the VMWs. I don’t see it on the latest Samsungs either.

    GE Washers Exploding

Some of the modern high-end GE washing machines are exploding during the spin cycle, not just Samsung. It mainly affects the impeller models. I’m even seeing it on the newer Profile units. It’s mainly happening to models such as the GTW720, GTW750, GTW680, GTW810, GTW860, GTW840, etc. The high...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

I’m guessing the inside of the motor spins that fast but not the outside of the motor. You said the motor pulley makes it spin slower.

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

I think the pulley reduces it, but the motor I don’t think spins faster than the drum unless there’s a mechanical issue. I don’t mind modern washers. I definitely like direct drives better, but the older Cabrios would’ve been great if they had good seal and bearing. The older VMWs and VMAXs were...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

For top loaders this with the case tho, I think the motors on your typical VMW spin at the same speed of the drum. The drum would only be slower than the motor if the bearings were severely worn, the speed sensor is failed, or the hub is stripped. Some of the VMWs go into the very low spin...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

Yes, those motors are not 20,000 RPM. The motor spins at the same RPM as the drum, tho the maximum speed of the motor is usually higher than the maximum washer spin speed. The drum would only spin slower than the motor if something was binding up (like a severe bearing issue or an issue with...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

Friction is a known factor for wheel bearing issues on a car, so excess heat from friction is likely a cause for bad bearings on washers that don’t leak. If it does leak then it’s the seal as the cause. Don’t think it’s the opposite. Overloading puts extra weight on the bearings (even if it...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

Motors use good heavy duty bearings, and the motor bearings are actually good quality. That’s just washer motor bearings. It’s quite common for the bearings on fan motors (both exhaust fan and box fan) to fail over time. Also, bearings do sometimes fail on motors as well. Better quality car...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

As well as lower spin speeds and better quality bearings, most newer machines use cheap quality bearings, causing them to fail even with good seals. The VMW Whirlpools often get bad bearings even with good seals and no signs of leakage, but simply because the bearing has worn and corroded...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

I think it does. Lower RPM puts less stress on the bearings. Friction produces heat, and heat puts stress on the bearings. Not sure about other components. Newer washers I heard do dry better than the older ones, but older washers I’m not saying left clothes soaking wet. In fact, clothes can be...

Whirlpool and Samsung are reducing the maximum spin speed on their washers

A lot of higher RPM washers aren’t that loud as long as the bearings and suspension are good, it’s engineered properly, and it’s level. It could be due to wrinkles, but washers have low speed cycles for a reason. There’s a reason why your casual or delicate cycle has a slower spin speed than the...
