Are modern refrigerators really worth the upgrade?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I'm more afraid of data collection rather than a wifi piece breaking down. Also don't like the trend of paying a monthly fee for certain options/functions. Some of the newest appliances require a smart phone for setup before it will even function. From what I've read, Bosch dishwashers are going this route. What stops a hacker from breaking into your appliance and screwing with functions remotely?

Back in 2012 when CIA Director David Petraeus stated "We'll will spy on you through your dishwasher" the public laughed it off. Not so funny anymore.

I'll plug in one of my monitor tops before I buy a refrigerator I have to connect to the internet before it'll work. They keep my beer colder anyways!

My 2016 fridge is more efficient than the 1996 model I brought when I moved in.
Did you measure this? One way in which modern fridges chest the energy use scam is by having the condenser coils on the bottom with a fan on them. It works great. For a short period before they are clogged with dust bunnies. After that their supposed efficiency goes South in a hurry.

Efficiency is NOT everything!

Ya beat me to it!.... the mention of dust clogging the coils!
People buy these fridges, and DON'T MAINTAIN THEM!
It's described in the Owner's Manual, but those manuals are not read anyway.
They plug it in, and forget it, it's too much trouble to be bothered with that nasty dust buildup.
They'd rather TEXT a servicemen to come out, or shop on Amazon for a new fridge.
People have gotten LAZY.

My old 1985 GE top freezer fridge has been purring happily since new, and doesn't run up my electric bill.

neither does my 1980 GE top freezer ( i have replaced both fans about 15 years ago-when they got noisy). Years ago had a family reunion and ran a couple spare fridges in the yard in direct sunlight : one a 2013 model the other an old 1977 WCI Kelvinator-the Kelvinator with about 1/4 hp compressor stayed cold while the late model could not...

When I got the house in 2005, one of the first things I did was to clean the fridge.
Cleaned the coils, and pulled the fan motor as a pro-active measure, and re-lubed it to prevent wear.
It's been quiet since then, and so is the freezer fan.
