Whirlpool Bathtubs & Jetted Showers Are A Fad

Thermostatic shower and bath valves are the standard here. I think no new houses have other valves. They have two knobs, one for the temperature and the other for the amount of water. My previous apartment had one too, so I’m showering with them for 24 years now. I wouldn’t to go back to another...

    Vintage Food Advertisements: Part Twenty-five

The American Milky Way is the same as a Mars bar here. Our Milky Way doesn’t have the caramel layer. Our Milky Way is much lighter. In the commercial was said children could it a Milky Way before dinner and it wouldn’t ruin their appetite.

A Dutch newspaper ad with a 1957 Frigidaire Unimatic in it

John, Robert mentioned a 50Hz/220 Volt motor in his first response, so who knows. Nowhere in the ads a spin speed is mentioned so we can only guess about that. To end the story about the American Frigidaires in the Netherlands, 1960 is the last year the American set is shown in an ad of the...

A Dutch newspaper ad with a 1957 Frigidaire Unimatic in it

Sean, directly after above message from me you post a long off topic reply. That’s funny at it’s best. That you don’t see why that made people laugh shows you have no sense of humour.

A Dutch newspaper ad with a 1957 Frigidaire Unimatic in it

In 1960 a new machine is introduced, a semi automatic. The name Aline is probably french, so it may be made there too. At the bottom of the ad an automatic washer and dryer is shown. Obviously a Frigidaire set with a Filtrator dryer.

A Dutch newspaper ad with a 1957 Frigidaire Unimatic in it

The Frigidaires sold overhere were probably imported from the USA like other American whitegoods. Frigidaire was especially well known here for their fridges. The Dutch word “koelkast” wasn’t used much. A lot of people used the name Frigidaire (pronounced in French!) for the product, even when...

A Dutch newspaper ad with a 1957 Frigidaire Unimatic in it

Here’s a small ad in the newspaper from April 23 1957. A private person is selling a Frigidaire washer and a Hamilton dryer. This is the first time I see a Hamilton appliance mentioned in a newspaper.

A Dutch newspaper ad with a 1957 Frigidaire Unimatic in it

I found another ad with an older model Unimatic. I hope you don’t mind I post this here… This ad is from March 17th 1956.

A Dutch newspaper ad with a 1957 Frigidaire Unimatic in it

I have no idea how many Unimatics were sold here. This is the first time I have seen an ad with this machine. Actually the same ad turned up a few times more, also in 1959. Westinghouse frontloaders are the most advertised American washers. But GE and Bendix were sold here too in the fifties...

A Dutch newspaper ad with a 1957 Frigidaire Unimatic in it

Robert’s thread about the introduction of automatic washers in the newspapers made me have a look again at the Dutch archives. I have posted a few threads with Dutch ads in the past. The first ads are from 1953. I looked a bit furder and much to my amazement I found a 1958 advertisement with a...
