Anyone know how to remove yellow staining on dishwasher racks?

It depends on what has caused the discolouration.  In addition to what's already been mentioned above, if it's due to tomato causing red/orange stains, the way to remove it is with benzoyl peroxide.  Add a tablespoon or two without detergent.  This was the active ingredient in Cascade Plastic...

Well done, Ben!  Great work and thanks for documenting it -- I often refer to these "tutorials" to help me fix my own machines!   Mark

how long to wear jeans before washing them

I typically wear jeans twice and then wash them.     But they only really need refreshing, so I give them a short, gentle wash in warm water.  In a TL, I wash them for about 6 minutes using slow agitation.  In an FL, I use the express cycle for a wash time of 10 minutes plus rinses.   I give...

Just when you thought you’ve seen it all on marketplace

Although Point Voyager dishwashers were introduced around 2001, the sump inlet cover/screen in the photo above would suggest that this is one of the last versions of the Point Voyager (Tahoe).  I imagine it might be around 10 years old.

    Heat Pump Dryers!

Thermal fuses are also for those who use half-century old dryers (me) and like the idea of having as many layers of protection as possible (also me).

    Heat Pump Dryers!

Hi Henrik.  Really good information there in your post.  I enjoyed reading it.  I will happily email you my gas and electricity bills if you'd like to take a look.  I know you didn't mention cost, which is why I said that there are a couple of OTHER things to take into account in my case.   ...

Just when you thought you’ve seen it all on marketplace

Ha yep.  I remember opening the dishwasher at a friend's house in England in the 90s and the upper rack spray arm had been installed upside down (holes pointing down!).  I think the water was just pouring out of the feed tube and nothing was going through the spray arm.  So I corrected that in...

    Heat Pump Dryers!

Henrik, there are a couple of other things to take into account in my case:    Firstly, I pay $0.06/kWh for gas and $0.46/kWh for electricity in Southern California.  So electricity is around 7x the price of gas.  Therefore, using a heat pump dryer is going to cost me more than double what it...

    Searching this site

For me, it doesn't work on my iPad any longer either.  In both cases, it opens the Google app and presents me with the Google app's homepage.  Even if I access AW on the Google app, surprisingly the same thing happens when I use the search function -- it simply takes me back to the Google app's...

    Searching this site

Hi Stan.  I'm glad you mentioned this, as I've been experiencing the same thing for the last 3 months or so.  I can no longer use the search box on my iPhone browser, as pressing "search" always opens the Google app.  This happens both with Safari and Chrome.  iPhone 13 Pro running iOS 18.1.1.  ...

Do you use heated dry on your dishwasher?

I've measured the electricity consumption of the heated dry on my dishwashers, vintage and modern, and it ranges from 0.1 kWh to a maximum of 0.3 kWh depending on the machine.  This is typically less energy than is consumed by heating the water if the machine is doing a high-temp final rinse.  ...

A 20 year old dream turns into reality

Wow, Ben!  Where do I even begin?!  Let's start with: CONGRATULATIONS!  An amazing achievement.     Looks like you've done a great job with the electrical, plumbing, floor, walls, I could go on....let alone the impressive and varied cross-section of machines.  Every time I look back up at the...

The Great Debate. Gas vs Electric Dryers

In terms of comparing the performance and user experience of vented electric versus gas dryers, I can't say I've ever noticed a difference.  Of course there are differences between makes and models etc., but I've never noticed a difference resulting from being gas or electrically heated.

The Great Debate. Gas vs Electric Dryers

Here in Southern California, my gas and electricity rates are tiered.   Gas starts out at $0.05/kWh and then increases by 1.5 cents to $0.065/kWh. Electricity starts out at $0.35/kWh and then goes up to $0.45/kWh.   We always end up in the higher tiers, so any change in usage will be...

    Fixing my Speed Queen Rustbucket

It's a shame that we'll never know what this machine was subjected to by its previous owner(s) and unfortunately I did not inspect the outer tub when I got the machine, so we'll never know for sure when this rust started.   What I can say is that I have probably only used chlorine bleach in...

1974 Lady Kenmore Outer Tub Repair HELP!

Update: Thanks for the advice on fixing up this washer.  I'm pleased to say it's working great with no leaks!  I removed the pump and it showed no signs of ever having leaked, so I think the dripping during draining might have been due to a loose hose.  Nevertheless I installed the new pump but...

    Fixing my Speed Queen Rustbucket

It's certainly much worse than I was expecting.  I definitely want to keep this set, so I'll fix the tub with POR-15 and just hope it holds up!

    Fixing my Speed Queen Rustbucket

If I could get a new tub under warranty, that would be great.  But I don't know who the original owner was and the warranty was never transferred to me, so I don't know if there's anything I can do about that now.

    Fixing my Speed Queen Rustbucket

I've just removed the lint filter.  Now, I could leave all these remaining components untouched and simply clean, prep and apply POR-15 to the tub below these components (there is enough room), leaving them in place and undisturbed (my preferred method).   Or is there any need to start taking...
