    Upstairs/Downstairs

Just replaced the Maytag FL pair in the upstairs laundry with a Speed Queen pair! So much better than the Maytags. They join the TL pair that I've got in the basement!

Is it too early for a Christmas tree / decorations thread?

One man's too early is another's just in time! The lighted wreaths and swags came today. Couldn't resist putting them up! We moved in at the beginning of last December. There was no time to put up anything for the holidays. Going to go all-out this year! I spent 10 years working for a Christmas...

    Out with the red...

Thanks Jim and Jerrod The red was a bit much! The old floor was functional and easy to clean -- but just not nice to look at! It really was like the tile you'd see in a Burger King kitchen! We love the reflective light from the glass tile. Found it at Home Depot. The installers did a great...

    Out with the red...

Bettler look at the wall color - for Tom/Kenmore 70 also - Congoleum is a vinyl product. This particular one installs like a laminate (floating) floor. Hard wearing and easy to care for. Looks like hardwood.

    Out with the red...

Thanks for the kind words! to answer a few questions -- We went all white, as it wasn't a total gut job. The only cabinets that were replaced were the uppers on the wall opposite the stove. (With the lighted cabinet.) I just put new doors on all of the rest of the uppers to get rid of the...

    Out with the red...

...and in with the new! Mike and I have been working hard to settle into our 1927 built home here in the Hudson Valley of New York. We love the house - but didn't love the prior owner's choices in the kitchen. We've just finished a kitchen re-do to that swapped out some cabinets and the counters...

    Another Queen in the ranks!

Mike, The new Speed Queens came from Atlantic Appliance - we've been buying there for almost 20 years now. Great place! --John

    Another Queen in the ranks!

The downstairs laundry in our new place had a tired old BOL GE dryer that gave up the ghost and a Maytag Dependable Care washer that although worked was starting to rust out. I decided to replace them both with Speed Queen - after the many glowing reviews here. I have to say after the first few...

    A mystery dial --

Thank you for the quick reply Fred! Dimmer it is! Now the mystery is what was being dimmed? It's at the bottom of what would have been the staircase for "the help". There is also a door at the bottom of the stairwell. I guess at this point whatever it was controlling is long gone. We'll have to...

    A mystery dial --

Does anyone have a clue as to what this dial is or may have controlled? It's at the bottom of the back stairs in my new house and we have no idea as to its origin! Thank you!! --John

Upstairs/Downstairs - A tale of two laundry rooms!

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I'm definately going to keep the Maytag top loader. Still not sure if I will replace the newer front load machine. I'm not sure what the space was before it was converted to laundry. I think they stole it from an adjacent bedroom. I don't need any more...

Here's the downstairs laundry... original location in the basement.

Upstairs/Downstairs - A tale of two laundry rooms!

Mike and I have finally settled into our new house. The prior owners added a second laundry room on the second floor - which is a great convenience with the bedrooms so close. However, the Maytag frontload pair that they left behind has been less than stellar! (Washer model MHWE450WW01) The...

It's been a big year for changes - --as much as we love the new kitchen, we're moving! Mike and I have lived in our home for almost 16 years and there's always been one house in our neighborhood that we've admired. It has been on and off the market now for the better part of two years...

    New Bosch Dishwashers (US)

Just installed this one with my kitchen remodel... So far, excellent cleaning results. Squeaky clean, actually. It really is virtually silent - the only indication that it's operating is the red light that shines on the floor...

Lots of sanding and many coats of paint later ...

Lots of sanding and many coats of paint later ...

... we have a new again china cabinet! Mike made this for us almost 20 years ago. It was originally a dark colonial blue color. We were able to color match paint to fit the new decor - after clouds of blue dust and several layers of paint the new finish looks great!

Very cool. I had not seen those covers before! Great idea. I got one from Williams-Sonoma that clips to the corners of the iPad and is washable.
