I'd use grey primer next time--it'll hide better. As for your finish, give it a good once-over with some rubbing compound and you'll be amazed at how good it turns out.

Throw me the model number and I'll look it up. Probably used a 477.

I make reproduction batteries for tube and transistor portable radios, and I just have finished next year's cover. Girl and hand are originally from a 1949 Ginger Ale advertisement. Had a fun time melding those fingers around that B battery. I'll throw in a few other pages if anyone's interested.

BTW, any chance we can see more detailed pix of the rest of the set, especially the fridge and shelves? Never heard of a built-in radio on an appliance before...

I might be able to help you with the radio--you'll need to replace all the paper capacitors and filter caps, and it'll be all set. It's probably a standard AC/DC model.

Not aiming to restore this one--I want to leave it as is. They're not hard to restore--just replace the electrolytic and paper caps. They fire right up, provided the output transformer's not open. You can still get batteries for this set--but I prefer to roll my own, as it's my sideline... :-)...

I've had many of these little RCA radios come and go in my collection, but this one's a keeper. This is one of the first "personal" radios, smallest that anyone could build at the time. It's also one of the first to use miniature tubes. Here's what arrived in the mail: Original 1940 vintage...
