    The New SQ TL Washers

I find both sides of this discussion interesting; since I didn't look at everybody's post, has anyone uttered "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN?" As for me, it's all moot. My SQ TL (mechanical controls) is a bit over 1.5 years old. As I had mentioned elsewhere in the past, I do prefer FL's having had an Asko...

    Westinghouse slant-front machines

I have a feeling Westinghouse redesigned the tub and housing out of necessity, as they quite likely were planning ahead to discontinue the slope-front styling, to the straight-line styling. My guess, is that way might have made manufacturing more cost effective in the long run; instead of having...

    POD 11/1/2017

I've seen old magazine ads for a Horton washer identical to the Launderall. Identiical because it was rebranded; apparently, this Horton brand (which itself would be doomed sometime in the '50s) acquired the rights after Jacobs went out of business. ..Or, at least, that's the story I heard.

This Hotpoint machine was from the mid-60's. I'm not exactly sure of the exact year; but I do know that the Intendified Tide detergent was around until circa 1968, when it was reformulated to the enzyme-laden Tide XK.

    CR Downrating Front Loaders

A word I've heard used to describe Consumer Reports is "persnickety." And, yes; even when they're right, there is still an element of bias. Their testing of washing machines, dryers, and "condiments" (detergents; fabric softeners; etc) does not seem to reflect the real world, as I've also...

    POD 10/8/17: Universal Brand Appliances

My grandmother had the same Universal range as the one pictured.

I, too liked the 1957-60 GE FF washers. Don't know why they couldn't retain the 68SPM agitation when they switched to a perforated tub. I personally never cared for spiral-vane agitators. But, that's just me.

This model was made in Australia; which is why you also never saw a semi-automatic version if this machine.

This looks like it's circa 1947/48. It's more than likely GE's idea for a postwar-era "dream" laundry, as depicted by an artist rendering. Granted, this layout was probably unlikely, despite the subsequent housing boom; but not inconceivable.

    '54 Westinghouse Dryer repair questions

Unfortunately, I can only answer one of your questions; until 1956, Westinghouse offered any color you wanted, so long as it was White.

New Speed Queen TL: More Indexing Than AWN542

After having had my SQ TL AWN432 for almost a year and a half, the tub still indexes, depending on the size of the load. However, it has no noticeable effect on the rollover action of the load. On the other hand, the tub does have a tendency to tilt somewhat (to the right) during agitation; but...

Unfortunately, I don't have a screen grab, but next time TCM shows the Cary Grant movie "ROOM FOR ONE MORE," there are scenes where the same Bendix machine in today's POD can be seen. Interesting, since this movie was from 1952.

Another aunt of my mom's had one of these in her summer home. I understand that a more serious problem, was the rubber inner tubs getting punctured, because of sharp objects left in pockets of shirts, pants, etc. There were so many incidents of this happening, that replacement of the rubber...

    Picture of the day

It looks a little like either a Blackstone, or a Bendix Economat.

This isn't so much about the product, as it is the advertising. When I was in college, I came across a book in the library about advertising, It had coined the term "ad-y," largely to describe the style of advertising used in postwar times, to sell appliances. It cited Whirlpool as the most...

IIRC, The Hupp Corporation also had Gibson refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners under its umbrella. When WCI took over, they abandoned the Easy brand name; utilizing the Gibson brand name in its place.

The large -capacity Maytags with the new Power-Fin agitator were also introduced in 1966.

This is another washing machine I remember vividly from early childhood, as one of my aunt's had one. Since at the time my family lived in an apartment complex, we did't have our own laundry machines. So, occasionally, my aunt would invite my mom to come to her house, and do our laundry there...

    Neutral Drains...

I had an Asko that would stop tumbling, and neutral-drained before going into the spin. (It also didn't tumble when it was filling with water).

Clotheslines... As I understand it, there is STATE ordinance in Vermont, forbidding the banning of clotheslines. In other words, if you live in Vermont, you CANNOT be denied the ownership/use of a clothesline. Another argument against these neighborhood association covenants. I guess the...
