What The Hell Is Going On Here?

"What's going on" is media outlets have found something to drive their 24/7 cycle of panic and doom. While I'll concede that these particular lock cylinders were probably the weakest example of such a part, 10-15 years ago we would have laughed off the idea of a stalled engine being the cause of...

    Need approximate photo date

As has been stated, the newest car in the photo is the '69 Plymouth. "I wonder why the '69 cop car would have yellow license plates? According to Wiki the state moved to black plates in 1964." I think municiple vehicles kept plates longer. Our gov vehicles in MI were running "spirit of '76"...

    Consumer Reports: Your Two Cents

I thought this might arise... "4. Random notes: Carmine, you are right when CR gave the Omni/Horizon a "Not Acceptable" rating in 1978. What you failed to point out is that in 1979, Chrysler changed the steering (both manual and power), requiring more effort. As a result, the Omni/Horizon was...

    Consumer Reports: Your Two Cents

Guess I'm not the only one who notes the problems with their methodology, lol. One of the most famous of examples of their/subscriber biases was the comparison of the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Plymouth Laser. (This was actually noted in one of Lee Iacocca's books) The Plymouth scored much lower...

Save what parts of this Maytag Center Dial?

Didn't seem to be much interest in this washer as a "whole", so I'm afraid it's off to the metal scrap yard (since I'm dumping a bunch of less-interesting stuff anyway)... I was going to save the control panel, is there anything else someone might want? Photo #3 shows the failure... the right...

    It lives!

That is an awesome set. I've always wanted a P-B (unknown on this end of the USA) because they were the only other brand to use point-to-point wiring. "Tubes" and "Printed Circuit" shouldn't be in the same sentence, let alone electronic device. That's why you see so many Zenith and P-B survivors.

    Random restoration.... Hankscraft vaporizer

Let them soak long enough in vinegar and it should remove the rust.

Sears "burning money" & closing stores

I agree with Washman I started at K-mart in Nov.'88 as Christmas help. As a 16-year old kid I saw the stupidity in the way K-mart was being transformed. I stayed 3-years and it was a very different place when I left (for the worse). Joe Antonnini trivia: Eminemm (the rap guy) lives in Joe's...

    Old ads touting energy efficiency

Supersuds, I apologize If that's how it came off. Sometimes when you scroll through quickly it's easy to forget who-posted-what. I suppose the Oldsmobile ad stuck because it was posted last. Thank you for the effort.

    Old ads touting energy efficiency

The auto ads are actually pretty easy to find (not to diminish the prior posts ;) Even into the "modern era". You know, when the only work being done in eeeevil Detroit was building musclecars (which were handily outsold by 6 cylinder cars that everyone has forgotten). The point I'm trying to...

    Old ads touting energy efficiency

I know I've seen them... Ads for old fridges that speak of more efficient designs, electricity savings, etc. Maybe something even exists for washers, etc. Can anyone point me towards a few? I'm looking to make the point (in another forum) that our so-called enlightened generation isn't the first...

I want these Maytags to go to a good home

So the dryer is still in use. I know people prefer matched sets, so what I propose is maybe $30 and a good working electric dryer in trade for both of these units. Is anyone interested?

I want these Maytags to go to a good home

My girlfriend has a matched set of Maytag center dials. (Electric dryer) She rents out her house in Toledo, OH to her younger sister. Much to our mutual dismay, the sister (who despises all things old) had a problem with the washer and replaced it with a new washer. (Some kind of T/L Amana...

    Whiney Whirlpool Calypso

Oh boy, that was fun... I forgot these things have all these diagnostic toys. Good party trick. Anyways, confirmed my suspicions. The pump is loud and I can hear it get louder when it would load-down and spray out a batch of water. So here's my plan. I'm going to run the rest of my laundry...

    Whiney Whirlpool Calypso

Have recently observed a high-pitched whine noise from my Calypso washer. Still working well, but wondering if this is leading up to something bad. Since this machine doesn't ever really "fill", the noise is present most of the time, a pump I'd assume. I got the matched set some tears ago for...
