David found this at the local Teen Challenge, and one trip to RadioShack (RF modulator and matching transformer) later, plus one digital converter and rabbit-ears, and we have lift-off!

The Packard Bell is a lovely, complete with axis-tuner, ultrasonic remote (just like the STAR), and Garrard phonograph...and it all works.

I was also amused to discover that some channels on UHF can still be found floating around.

Another one!

Nate, I was just commenting on classiccaprice's Zenith(he just bought it to replace his old round screen tv). Now here's your new (old) tv. Wow, this looks cool - more photos? Congrats!

These bring back memories of gazing at all the tvs and large consoles in showrooms and how I miss the 60hz hum emitted from all the tv's(like a concert). There's nothing like it. :-) The last time I remember this was at Sears, when they were just bringing out large screen projector tv's (early 1980s?).

Do you plan to play any records; i.e.; do you already have a collection of records you'll use? Also, just curious...do you have a flat screen that you use elsewhere for certain broadcasts?

I'm jealous, but not worried - something will come along one day that suits me -

PLEASE post more photos! Thanks again!

More photos on the way!

I'll clear the RadioShock boxes off and get some decent glam shots tomorrow.

We had this delivered. Good thing, because it, like Ralph's Tru-Cold freezer, will be demolished with the house. I can only surmise that Packard Bell offered service to your door with a forklift. Jeezus!

Not sure re: the Magnavox. This is an all-tube TV, with that satisfying 30 sec pause before warming up, followed by a "whoosh!" of static when the screen comes on. Delish. I need to diddle with the brightness and focus on the screen, but we're enjoying it as-is tonight.

The Maggie is solid-state, and while super-cool in most respects, makes me wonder how repairable it really is. I suspect it's got a short or other fault on the tuner board, because it hunts, and hunts, and hunts channels, in order, 1-99, over and over. STAR shouldn't do that; there was no channel up/down, just selective tuning. At random. You know.

That's a very nifty combo

You'll have to post a few more photos showing the stereo sections. What is "Teen Challenge? Is it some type of thrift store? The appliance store I worked at as a kid carried Packard Bell. As I recall it was always very pricey.

OMG, then the PB isn't on casters like the Maggie?  That was a very close call . . . ;-)

Maybe you can put casters on the PB if it won't look weird.  The rolling ball type seem appropriate, and once I get that amber glass swag lamp shipped off to you, it will complete the look.

I like the Mediterranean cabinetry. That look was so popular in the 1970s; it was everywhere. I think housewives were swept up in a collective fantasy of having a Latin Lover. Since that wasn't going to happen, the next best thing was to have your home decor look the part.

Doug!

You are too much. I wouldn't have time for that sort of thing! I'm already testy from trying to balance my martini in one hand and my cigarette in the other. :-)

Here's pic-o-rama--please forgive the crappy sun-spotting. I'm guessing this is a '68 or so; it's before the Teledyne acquisition that changed the branding.

Teen Challenge

Yes, it's a thrift store, religious-based and geared toward helping teens with addiction. It's been a great store both here and in San Jose; the SJ store yielded our hefty and awesome Norelco Rapid-Range microwave with Dial-a-Meal :-).

That is an awesome set. I've always wanted a P-B (unknown on this end of the USA) because they were the only other brand to use point-to-point wiring. "Tubes" and "Printed Circuit" shouldn't be in the same sentence, let alone electronic device. That's why you see so many Zenith and P-B survivors.
