Pink Lady Kenmore 800 Dryer in Chicago

John wasn't the seven minute sheet drying also because they were spun in their Unimatic washer?

    Marketplace find

It was a delayed bleach injection system, not timed.

This is similar to one we saw in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.

    Lady K combo

When used to walk through side streets off 41 in Sarasota, I would dream of having a job in retirement of doing laundry for a small motel.

    Lady K combo

I would think that if a house had room for two combos, it would be able to accommodate a washer and dryer pair which would allow faster throughput.

    Lady K combo

I found a nice LK Combo in the basement of a big downtown church in DC. It was amazing the wealth of churches back then. They stopped using it because it developed a leak. Jeff and I and maybe our friend Phil went down and got it. I gave the church a contribution for it. All of the gay kids...

Calgon Water Softener powder / NLA

I was only referencing the 50s Norges to show their early relationship with Calgon.

Calgon Water Softener powder / NLA

I'm not surprised. Norge started offering the Dispenser wheel that sat on top of the agitator to dispense Calgon in the mid 50s. The next year it was replaced by the Burp-o-Lator agitator-mounted lint filter. Then when the Dispensomat washer was introduced, there was a special compartment for...

Buying a new Toilet this weekend - Any advice?

I remember reading about a section of SF where the terrible smell of the clogged sewers comes up through the street. All of the toilets on the line were low flow and the main sewer lines were half full of "sludge." I would bet that my sewer line is clear because of the amount of laundry I wash...

    soap door won't open automatically

Have you checked the filter screen? If it is heavily coated with food soil, water flow through the pump will be restricted and the pump will not draw enough current to heat up the bi-metal spring to release the dispenser cover.

    Vintage Bendix automatic on Marketplace

Many homes in the South did not have basements so machines were installed on wooden floors. A hole was drilled through the joists and the machine anchored through the joists to a steel plate under the joists. This could cause some wild movements of cabinets when the spin started. I remember a...

    Vintage Bendix automatic on Marketplace

Thanks for posting. Decades ago, after a Washington Post article about our appliance collection, we were called by the son of a recently deceased woman in Arlington, VA who was a German war bride. The house was a museum of carefully used household goods with many of the small electrics stored in...

Calgon Water Softener powder / NLA

The interesting thing about Calgon, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Na6P6O18 is that unlike the other Sodium Phosphates, a 1% solution has a pH of of 6.8 which places it below the neutrality of 7 and makes it better for dealing with Calcium hardness than Magnesium hardness. The solutions are not...

Calgon Water Softener powder / NLA

Calgon is chemically known as Sodium Hexametaphosphate. If you search Sodium Hexametaphosphate on Amazon, you will find several suppliers. It was never cheap and it is even more expensive now.

"This is The Way We Wash Our Clothes" - 16mm Film

Breaking wash water means adding alkaline chemicals to tie up the calcium magnesium salts that make water hard. STPP is the most effective non-precipitating water softener in use. Bud in Texas wrote that during a heat wave the cold water was so warm that STPP had to be added to the initial...

"This is The Way We Wash Our Clothes" - 16mm Film

But, as our laundry man Bud (?) told us, a hot break with STPP will allow you to start protein stains with warmer water without setting the stains. I have started blood spotted linens in the 806 with STPP and detergent in warm water and the water level set to small in the prewash portion of the...

"This is The Way We Wash Our Clothes" - 16mm Film

That little girl stuffing fabric into the little toy washer reminds me of what I did with my Jack in the Box. I turned it into a washing machine using the creature's clothing as the washer load. I remember this happening in Illinois so I was 3 or 4. I don't believe that comforter stuffed into...

Frigidaire vintage wall oven and fold down burners (Dorchester Ontario)

John and I found that oven in a thrift store in Georgia. It cleaned up beautifully and is a champion performer at baking and broiling. Unlike some builtin ovens, the Frigidaires used the same liner as in their 40" ranges' master ovens so it really holds a lot. The broiler is open coil and has a...
