Sub-basement laundry
I was in the white house basement laundry around 1976 or 1977 to repair the ironer in the pic. Had to replace all 4 heating elements, they were about 10' long Calrod style elements inside the central roller. Because of the size of the room, I had to have some staff help me...
Early mildew problems,
My brother and I saw Westinghouse FL washers with mildew problems in the 60's and 70's. It was not a common as today, as hotter water and better detergent were used then.
My washer cycle is, Prewash, Wash, Spray rinse, 200 RPM spin, Rinse, 200 RPM spin, Rinse, 400 RPM spin. Total cycle time is about 25 min. The washer cleans very well, but the spin speed is low. I'm lucky to have a Bock extractor that I always use.
My washer is bolted down to the concrete floor with 3/8" lag bolts about 4" long into lead shields. I think it would be easy to install an electric pump, I thought about doing it when I had a pump seal leak, but was able to find a new seal and repair it.
Some photos of my Philco-Bendix washer,
Photos 1 thru 9, I found this new in the box several years ago.

Iron-out and detergent,
Iron-out and detergent should not be used at the same time. Iron-out is an acid, and detergent is base, they will neutralize each other and be ineffective. They should be used at different times.
