Good intentions, but bad results. I agree. Penny wise and pound foolish. Knowing how to clean things correctly really helps them last. It's one place I've learned it really doesn't pay to cut corners.

I agree with Tomturbomatic's suggestions ... but don't be afraid to use liquid chlorine bleach once in a great while, especially on a white shirt. It does a fantastic job on this kind of thing. LCB really is pretty safe to use if you follow the instructions on the bottle and dilute it...

hardwood floor cleaner We use "Bona" Kemi hardwood floor cleaner. Our house is 134 years old, and was in horrible shape when we bought it. We put in new hardwood floors and stairs in 1994 and refinished them in 2007. We're very careful with our "new floors": no shoes in the house, etc...

Good old fashioned "Biz" works really well, too, for Has enzymes and activated oxygen bleach. It does have optical brighteners so you shouldn't really use it on dark colors. http://bizstainfighter.com/

I say skip it I'm not sure what you mean when you say your dad doesn't have "a real setup for a traditional washer and dryer"... ...but wringer washers need a water source, a drain to drain into, and one or two laundry sinks for rinsing the laundry.
