Sorry guys but it turns out that the machine is an '85 Belt Drive Whirly and not a DD that won't spin. If anyone can help me figure out what is wrong I'd be forever grateful.

My towels had the same problem. Eventhough they are not white I started putting a 1/4c of bleach in the bleach dispenser and programming for an extra rinse. Problem gone and the minimal fading of the towels was well worth getting rid of the funky smell so easily.

We can all sleep peacefully in the neighborhood knowing that another load has been washed, folded and put away using the fabulous WI-56. Peace to all and to all a good night!
