What a Stressful Weekend it Was - Please Read This...

We've been very lucky to have a site owner with Robert's combination of collecting/restoration knowledge AND his friendly, even temperament. If the sites are for sale, that implies they're profitable, which is a big plus. Nobody will have to take them on at a loss.

    Omo detergent in the USA

It seems to have nothing special: It isn't concentrated (1 and 1/4 cups was a standard starting dose for most brands at the time) or low sudsing, and makes no claims about enzymes or bleach. Why would the average person buy it? Who knows? This was a period when a lot of new brands were being...

    Omo detergent in the USA

I'm guessing its from the late Sixties because it has no statement of phosphate content, but contains the standard language of the time about using more detergent rather than a packaged water softener (i.e., Calgon).

    Omo detergent in the USA

This might be interesting to half a dozen people on this forum, anyway.   Omo is a brand name used by Unilever for its top-of-the line detergent in many markets (Australia, Brazil, South Africa, parts of Europe.) Apparently they took a shot at marketing it in America in the late Sixties and...

    1950s Montgomery Ward fridge

Admiral bought Stewart-Warner's refrigerator business in 1944. They, and Montgomery Ward, were all Chicago-based -- which proves nothing, but is perhaps suggestive...

What Temperature Is Your AC Thermostat Set To?

77 now; sometimes it's on 76 or even 75 depending on activity levels. I recently visited a friend for the weekend. He normally keeps his AC at 75, which is fine, but he was gun-shy because his sister demands it be put on 68 when she stays there. I kept telling him it was okay, but he was so...

Kelvinator fridge compressor very strange symptom!

Double Cola is headquartered in Chattanooga, and got its name because you could get 12 oz. for the price of a 6 oz. Coca-Cola. My dad joked that it was because it caused twice as many burps as Coke. Anyway, it’s a niche product these days, although you can buy it in grocery stores around here.

Kelvinator fridge compressor very strange symptom!

Thanks for taking the time, David! Seeing that unit, including bottle opener, brought back some fond memories of country stores. Is this the same compressor Kelvinator used in their domestic fridges and advertised as the Polarsphere?

It's Official - Tide Free & Gentle Powder is Gone for Good

I made one of my rare visits to Walmart a couple of weeks ago, and was pleased to see they had Tide Ultra Oxi powder. It may have TAED now, but it works as well for me as previous formulations, and the scent is not too bad on clothes. I did put the powder I’m Mason jars to keep the entire...

    Detergent digital swap meet

I did some of these exchanges a dozen or more years ago, and as Launderess says, the shipping was brutally expensive. I can’t imagine how bad it would be now. But in case it’s helpful, Adam, one of my Aussie correspondents said that he could get Tide powder at Costco, I think in Melbourne. So...

Art Carney Advertising Stewart Warner Refrigerators

I believe Stewart-Warner sold off its fridge operation to Admiral after WWII. Some may remember the Admiral Dual-Temp as the first combination refrigerator-freezer on the market, but Stewart-Warner had introduced it originally.

    Nationwide gas stove ban?

Also of note, a large peer-reviewed study published by the National Institutes of Health found as follows: "We detected no evidence of an association between the use of gas as a cooking fuel and either asthma symptoms or asthma diagnosis." https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24429203/

    Trading Stamps

I’ve got a GE kitchen clock that my mom got at the S&H store. I’ve used the method supplied by RP2813/Ralph to keep the rotor from grinding. All it needs now is a new cord. When I told my nephew we got the clock with Green Stamps, he asked if that was “a government program.” Heh.
