Asks T761 Dryer. Ouch! Painful reviews...

Confirm with an 'expert':   Run capacitors are sturdier, since they, well, run.  Continuous duty.    Start capacitors, intermittent duty.  A start will die if used in place of a run.   If all those bear out, substituting a run where a start was should be OK.   Contracept me if I'm full...

    weird nightime Lasko fan noises...

Not all Emersons are created equally.  For a small window I bought a small Emerson box fan in 1968.  Good thing I was home/awake when it started smoking.    Only been a month so I took it back and they gave me another one.  Wasn't long before that one smoked too.  Decided to do without.  ...

    Favorite Agitator?

3-ring Frigidaire.  Impressive turnover, apparent gentleness, impressive extraction.  Had one briefly in a 1967 rental.  Growing up with a slant W'house, I probably was not overly critical of tangling.    Grandma's Easy spiralator could suck down anything you put in it.  'It could drown a...

Got my new Maytag MVWP575GW a week ago. Doesn't want to fill up to the top

That's what our commercial maytags do here at the old folks warehouse.

Auto 'mechanical breakdown' insurance: quick look

Yes, I left off the calls and letters.  I get those too.  I think the calls mostly outright scams.  Never looked closely at the letters.   The industry as a whole is a scam.  Pretty much anywhere there is a crooked buck to be made, someone is already making it. Another thing that was gooder...

Auto 'mechanical breakdown' insurance: quick look

If you watch commercial TV, you are beseiged by these ads for 'car repair' insurance.  "Car Shield"™ is one but not the only.  Not that my 35yo Toyota qualifies, but I looked briefly into the genre.   I'd say disregard the come-on claims.  Like much TV advertising, the BS quotient is high. ...

Later models.  Both Porky and Easy.  Squarish spin lid; sparse animation.

Very Special & Unique Speed Queen Commercial Washer

Very realistic price IINM.  Outside the 'collectable' category.   Happen to know a ballpark for MSRP?

    Sears Coldspot Refrigerator early 1930s

From the Stooges, a block of ice was a dime which would be $1.67 today.    A chart shows 1930 electricity was $0.60/kWh in 1992 dollars which would be $1.12 today.    The Coldspot probably wasn't all that efficient, but it also wasn't all that ambitious.  For convenience, say it took one...

    Speed Queen Commerical Front Load

Bolt down.   A 2-speed 2-winding AC motor will brake when switched from high to low. <span style="font-size: 10pt;">This does not apply to small AC fan motors where the two windings are used to change torque rather than speed.  You'll note that with the blades removed there is no change in...

    Incoming Water Tap Temps....

Rather hope I don't live long enough to see it lower than it is right now, what with 40% of our electric capacity frozen.  Ordinarily doesn't get below 60F winter, 80F summer.    Right now, digital/laser thermo calls it 48F.  That's after it has traversed 3 floors of building plumbing.  By the...

You can be sure if it's WESTINGHOUSE .... Dinner at 6

Somewhat lengthy at 1hr 52min, below link is a biographical docu of Westinghouse the man and the organization.  If you watched "Current War", watch this for a much less dramatically-enhanced version of what George was about.   'Industrialist' is rather a dirty word today.  Frankly, it was...

Vintage UK Hoover film on twintubs, vacuum, polisher & iron

How Madison Avenue to call it "Hoovermatic" when the only thing "matic" about it was it would stop when the windup timer hit zero.

    Maytag A608 Slow Agitation

The slider and belt tension arrangement accounts for slippage.  When the trans oil is cold that's enough extra load on the pulley to make the belt slip.  You can hear it happening.  Switch low, that sound goes away.   To get you through winter, start the machine on low speed.  Depending how...

    Maytag A608 Slow Agitation

It's winter in Chicago.  Really, that's the problem.  Even winter in Austin TX does that to elder Maytags.    Wait for an expert to say what you can do about it that's practical.  Like replace the trans oil.   Or wait for summer.

The Convair 880 flies again! (sort of)

Thanks, it comes back now.  I was 12yo, much more aware of appliances than aircraft.

The Convair 880 flies again! (sort of)

The one with square-ish windows was Comet, British.  Fuse cracked/exploded after x pressure cycles.   Long time since refresh, but wasn't Convair the one with resonances that shook it apart mid air?

    advantage of additives in detergents

[Slightly cynically]  P&G likes to take up grocery shelf space.  Like old Phil Spector's "wall of sound", P&G has a "wall of Tide".  They do the same thing with toothpaste.  That's most of what the 'enhanced formulas' do, that and smell different.

Cute Countertop Dishwasher with Water Reservoir

From the reviews, if you get a good one you'll like it.  If you get a bum one, you're stuck;  there is ZERO support.
