    Brand new in the box.

I suppose this is the forerunner to the crappy impeller washers on the market today.

    1950s Kenmore automatic washer

Welcome to the club, Justin! This is Les in Atlanta. Right now I have three vintage washers: a 1962 Maytag, a 1968 Speed Queen and a mid 70's Norge. I love the older Kenmores so you should have a lot of fun with this one. My husband thinks I'm nuts with my vintage appliance obsession but he...

    Early 50's ABC-O-Matic

I was watching the 1955 film "The Desperate Hours" with Humphrey Bogart and Fredric March the other night and spotted what appears to be an early 50's ABC washer in the laundry room of March's house. It had the same window lid and lid handle that Robert Unimatic's 49 model has and same front...

1964 Kenmore Video: Odd Behaviors During 1st Drain

The 63 model was just like the 64 except it had the pregnant roto swirl and the wash n wear cycle was pink instead of beige.

Tell me more about Magic Chef

I have a late 70's Norge washer with the Magic Chef name on it so I'm guessing Fedders owned them for a brief period.

1964 Kenmore Video: Odd Behaviors During 1st Drain

One thing I noticed is that it seems to be coasting to a stop longer than Kenmores usually do.

Self-service laundry on board our cruise ship

We took an Alaskan cruise on a Princess ship several years ago and it had s self-serv laundry with Maytags. They were the short stroke models very much like the ones on your ship.

Doris looks like she's been nipping in the cooking sherry.

Who made this Caloric washer? It looks like a Zenith from the same period.

Washers on The Andy Griffith Show

Hazel Best I remember, Hazel had a Philco washer. I also remember Bub (William Frawley) doing laundry in a 1960 or 61 Frigidaire on an early episode of "My Three Sons".

Washers on The Andy Griffith Show

I was watching the episode where Aunt Bee won all the appliances on a quiz show and noticed the washer & dryer were brown RCA Whirlpools circa 1965 but I was trying to figure out what make the coin-op washers were on the episode that Andy opened a coin laundry. They were pink, had a round window...

    Washers with timed fill

I have a late 60's solid tub Speed Queen with a time fill. It's the first model with the reversible motor.

    Washers with timed fill

Hotpoint continued to use a time fil and solid tubl until the early 70's when they became rebranded GE's with perforated tubs.

If "her boys" don't wear pajamas, does that mean they run around naked at night? LOL.That poor woman sure has a lot of testosterone to deal with!

    Single Speed Washers?

I have a late 60's Speed Queen, the first model with the reversing motor. It has a Normal cycle and a separate "durable press" cycle. I use the durable press quite often. The machine has a separate feed control dial so I can have a normal agitate and spin speed on the DP cycle. It's great when...

    POD 11-9-2017

And now Whirlpool has committed the same travesty against Maytag. I'm so thankful to have a REAL Maytag in my laundry room - my 1962. Let's face it, the only company that still offers an old-fashioned top loader the way a top loader should be is Speed Queen.

Good heavens! A Frigidaire after it was raped, pillaged, and plundered by WCI! Sacrilege!

I'm surprised this Hotpoint washer has a safety lid switch for the spin cycle. I didn't think Hotpoint began using that until the late 60's on he models with the blue spiral agitators which were the last REAL Hotpoints before they became rebranded GEs.

Most common brand of vintage washing machines

Next to Kenmore and GE, there were also quite a few Maytags and Frigidaires around Atlanta because the Georgia Power appliance stores sold those two brands.

Most common brand of vintage washing machines

When I was growing up in Atlanta in the 60's and 70's, the two most common brands were Kenmore and GE. Lower income families bought Kenmore because of Sears easy credit plan and middle to upper income families bought GE because Rich's Department Store, the premier store in Atlanta, was the...
