Removing a bad paint job. 1958 GE Fridge.

GE paint from this era is dismal. It’s thin, and will rub off easily. Even an alkaline cleaner will start to take off paint and cause streaking. Scrubbing will cause areas to lighten and it will stay darker in areas you tended to scrub less. Ask me how I know :) haha all 4 of my yellow 50s GE...

1957 GE Washer & Dryer project thread

James, What do you mean by coaxing? Any tips to get it working? The service manual lists some tests and I just haven’t gotten there yet. I bought a new old stock probe that probably goes to an early 60s GE but it’s the same plug style so figuring it’ll work. Were your contacts just corroded...

GE Mobile Maid Possibly Up For Offer

I appreciate you asking, no one wants to scrap antiques. The etching is probably from your water mineral contents, and is probably not at all due to the dishwasher itself I would assume? I had the same problem growing up in Michigan and it’s nonexistent out here in the Pacific Northwest where...

1957 GE Washer & Dryer project thread

Slightly off topic but I’m expanding the 50s GE collection! Haven’t been doing to much with washer or dryers lately - mine are running ( although I still need to replace the water fill shutdown switch unit that mounts under the tub if anyone has leads). I did ship a 1956 TOL GE Liberator from...

    Frigidaire Unimatic washer

For any appliance on the east coast (yes, like PA) you have to generally add 1000 to 2000 for shipping, depending on a variety of factors. One can only do that once or twice before it starts to become infeasible ( or at least a bad use of funds unless you have a trust fund!).

GE Wall Refrigerator - pink - thoughts?

Woohoo! I am happy to hear that. Excellent news! Make sure you don’t use it unless you had it sitting upright in transit. The freezer compartment gets cold first. You’ll need to leave it on for 24 hours or so before you can really start to tell how cold the refrigerator compartment gets cold...

GE Wall Refrigerator - pink - thoughts?

I wouldn’t replace the compressor just for the heck of it. That’s not a gut feeling type of decision. Only replace it if it isn’t working and you diagnosed that it it was compressor itself. Easy enough to measure for shorts etc. The point of vintage items is (generally) the higher quality, made...

GE Wall Refrigerator - pink - thoughts?

How did they characterize it not working? I watched the video, there should be a cold control like mine. If tuned all the way past 1, it is off. It might be as simple as that since I didn’t see the control - perhaps no one unfamiliar with these knows to look for it. To be difficult ,Unless...

GE Wall Refrigerator - pink - thoughts?

I have the floor model version of this fridge in yellow. Your know it’s a 57 because it’s a pink interior. You should definely take this. Worst case ppl on facebook would love parts, but these tend to sell for a lot of money when working. These are veryyyy heavy. You will need 2 , suggest 3...

1957 GE Washer & Dryer project thread

I know me so well…. Knew this was going to happen after having disconnected the pressure switch until I find a spring replacement. Started a load of wash and promptly walked away doing other chores. Later I just hear my roommate’s blood-curdling scream from the basement as the washer has just...

1957 GE Washer & Dryer project thread

2nd half of the first spin ( it pauses and then speeds up since the water is mostly drained). Other than the water level issue, it cleans very well. Please ignore my dirty basement as this has prompted me to renovate my laundry area into a 1940s/50s themed laundry room. I am currently in the...

1957 GE Washer & Dryer project thread

Hi Stan and others. Sorry it’s been so long but life has been rather hectic. Update - had the original clutch practically rebuilt, new bearings etc but is was soooo noisy is sounded like a jack hammer was going off. I bought a replacement clutch (probably 80s era??) and finally got it installed...

Restore or Re-Sell - Seeking Advice

You said you have the matching dryer? I’d say sell the mint condition boxed set. Imo you only cannibalize sets too far gone to save. That washer looks incredible!
