    Borax! Who’s still using ?

I use a little Borax in the shirt load to remove the smell of scented antiperspirant and cologne. It works like a charm.

    Appliance Simplicity

"More advanced countries"?   Wikipedia says: "Brazil is the world's tenth largest energy consumer with much of its energy coming from renewable sources, particularly hydroelectricity and ethanol; the Itaipu Dam is the world's largest hydroelectric plant by energy generation, and the country...

    1952 GE fridge not cycling

I have the same refrigerator but one year older.  Mine started to run constantly, so I unplugged it and left it open for a week to dry out.    It now works like it used to, running less than half the time, freezer at 3°f, and refrigerator at 36°f.   My theory is, because it had not been...

    Whirlpool Transmissions Oil Question

Combo 52 wrote: "Even in cold environments WP washers like all other washers ever built will not have trouble agitating like Maytags with the silly slipping belt drive when you are trying to wash clothes."       And in the freezing cold, with a Whirlpool transmission full of molasses, the...

    Happy 20th Anniversary...

I forgot about the "Welcome To Applianceville" page.  Wow, have I really been here for 19 years?     This is a great forum.  Thank you Robert, and Happy anniversary!

    Kenmore Pair at Costco

The plain black hoses supplied with a washer, or purchased from an appliance parts store, are fine. Not so much the ones found in a 'big box' or discount stores. In my opinion, the fancy hoses with the steel braid on the outside are a whole lot of hooey.

    Tide Zero

I use Tide "original" , without the "HE" sticker in my top-loader, which gives me excellent results.  I'm thinking that it doesn't have OBAs.  Am I correct?

    1953 Coldspot fridge repair story...

Dave, you are a true technician and an artist.  I went to vocational school for household refrigeration, and the quality of your work, along with your knowledge, just blows me away.

Another refrigerator exploded in a house

R600a refrigerant is isobutane.  I don't think I want that in my refrigerator!

    Washer with oil spots

We had GE Filter-Flo washers when I was growing up.  Dad was a GE service tech, and Mom was a registered nurse.  About every 5 years mom's white nursing uniforms started to get oil spots on them, and then dad would replace the transmission in the washing machine.

Should I use modern Tide in my vintage washers?

I've been using Tide 'Original' liquid, the one without the HE sticker, in my Maytag A606 for the last year or so with excellent results.   Reading this again, I'll add that I believe that Laundress is on point with her advice.

Why Did Older Dishwasher Have Such Enormous Motors?

As one one of the few who still uses a portable full-size dishwasher that get's parked in front of the sink, I appreciate a machine that finishes in a reasonable amount of time.  My 18 year old Maytag Jetclean portable runs for 51 minutes on 'light wash' and does a fine job.  I dread the day...

    Maytag A806 turn over

Of course there will be loads that are a bit much for 'medium', yet a bit light for 'normal'.     As I see it, the main design flaw on these machines is that, with the lid switch operating, the owner can't learn to load the machine because they can't see what it's doing.   I wish you the...

    Maytag A806 turn over

A Maytag does not need to be underloaded, it needs to be properly loaded.  That said, the machine in casciomichael's video appears to be a bit underloaded.  A full load that turns over slowly will get cleanest. [this post was last edited: 4/12/2021-06:03]

    Questions about bath towels....

I use chlorine bleach for two wash loads, white underwear, and kitchen rags.  For the underwear load, I add 1/2 a cup to 18 gallons of water, and the elastic on my Hanes briefs lasts for years.  For the kitchen rag load I use 1/2 cup of bleach to 8 gallons for kitchen safety.   Bath towels...

    What? No more warm water?

If I wash a large 40 gallon load in my Maytag with it set to warm, it uses about 9 gallons of hot water.  Figuring that it costs about 2¢ a gallon to heat hot water, my cost is 18¢
