    Zanussi FJS 1597 W

Got it!! Picked it up this afternoon. No time to look at it properly and/or plumb it in.... It will need a thorough clean inside and out.... Could hear water (of indeterminate age) in the sump when we moved it, and it has some old and crusty detergent in the drawer. I suppose that will do to...

10 dangerous things in Victorian/Edwardian homes

More From Reply#15.. Yes, it is true that carbolic soaps such as Lifebuoy and Wright's Coal Tar are no longer available. The government and manufacturers (being aware of how 'conservative' the average Briton is) took pains not to publicise the fact, and those brands can still be bought. They do...

    Zanussi FJS 1597 W

Further info.... The front panel graphics describe the machine as 'Zanussi Jetsystem Excel 1450'. No idea of which 'series' it is.... I will try to get a look at the data plate on the back of it next time I'm in the area. (Assuming that the data plate IS on the back and not underneath or inside...

10 dangerous things in Victorian/Edwardian homes

Celluloid, etc Not yet had chance to follow the 'link', but... On the subject of the 'iron box' under the kitchen sink (Reply#3), yes, it's a grease trap. All kitchen sinks should have one!! As far as I know, there is still a regulation in force requiring one to be fitted to all kitchen sinks...

    Zanussi FJS 1597 W

I have just spotted one of these, and am considering getting it for the Good Lady, to relace her increasingly dysfunctional Whirlpool. Does anyone have any experience of this model?? Are there any 'known problems' I should check for?? There is quite heavy rusting of the front panel just under...

Selling my Hoover A3110 Electronic 1100

Not ignoring you, Richard But have just had a bunch of unexpected work dumped on me. Will try to find time to look for timers later this week.... All best Dave T P.S. If it's the actual motor gear which has worn (and, let's face it, that's the one which turns fastest/has least teeth/wears...

1950s Can Opener Motor - Need Help

Bearing failure This looks like a fairly typical 'Shaded-Pole' motor. Wear in the bearing or bearing carrier is a frequent reason for rebuilding this type of motor. The bearing itself usually looks like a 1/2" bronze ball with the shaft hole through it. This is held in the carrier either by...

Why are we more scared of raw egg than reheated rice?

Food poisoning Thanks for the memories, Sudsmaster... I remember the 'Eggwina Currie' debacle well!! My own experience has seen four unpleasant food poisoning episodes, none of them 'egg-related', but one of which was 'rice-related'. A previous girlfriend of mine had boiled rice from a local...

A clock restoration, and a new (old) electric range.

Compact fluorescent Vs Incandescent Nice restoration work, Crevicetool. My only worry about using CFLs is that while they produce slightly less heat than Incandescents, they produce a LOT more UV. Please watch for signs of premature ageing, yellowing and brittleness in the surrounding plastic...

Reversing on modern White Knight dryers et al?

Reversing Neither of my driers reverse, and I have had no problems, but then I don't overload them. Large items (duvet covers, etc.) are dried singly, so they 'float' in the airstream. More 'labour-intensive', I know, but each one dries in the time it takes to iron the last... ;-) All best Dave T

Selling my Hoover A3110 Electronic 1100

Timer I have lots of timers 'in stock', but no idea what machines any of them are from. Could you please post a picture (or two, or three) of your timer, along with maker's name, part/model number, etc. If I have one, it's yours for the postage... All best Dave T

    low pressure sodium lights

Street lighting / Street Furniture Interesting discussion on various types of lighting. On this side of the 'pond', LP Sodium was pretty much Universal for many, many years as street lighting. There has been a gradual (now almost complete) change to HP Sodium. I have seen very few mercury...

You want your freezer how COLD?

Very much the same here, Tolivac... Was aiming to be a Medical Lab Technician, then suddenly I was a G.P.O. comms engineer.... $4!!!!!!!!!!!! What a steal!!! Probably cost too much to post to this side of the 'pond'... :-( All best Dave T

    Ideas For "Ins"

...-ins I'm all for a 'drill-in'!! I like power tools, too... (rp2813, Reply #2) I could also go for a 'test-in' or 'repair-in'... A chance to use some vintage test-gear to diagnose and repair some vintage appliances.... Right now, though, I could use a 'lie-in'.... I'm just not getting...

You want your freezer how COLD?

Microtomes Never used a 'cooled' microtome. We would either wax-impregnate or freeze-dry AND wax-impregnate samples before sectioning on a room temperature microtome. Saying that, our college had very limited funds.... :( It never ceases to amaze me how diverse the conversation topics can be...

    Air Conditioner Mystery

Corrosion I'd just noticed that, too, Whirlaway. The fins appear to be aluminum, the tubes copper.... That's good for electrolytic corrosion if they are kept damp. Is this unit near a boiler flue, bathroom extractor flue or similar?? If the tubes ARE copper, you could try soldering new (copper)...

US Expat Describes The Best And Worst Things About England

'Multi-reply' "Do the brits really iron everything??" - Yes, it is probably true to say that most of them DID iron everything. My mother ironed everything which came out of the washing machine, and 'pressed' (iron with damp cloth) everything which was hand washed, and I mean EVERYTHING...

Fuel Cost Caculator For Home Heating

For anyone interested Energy costs in the U.K. (from my suppliers, anyway) Electricity £0.1575 per kW/h, plus 'standing charge' of £0.105 per DAY Gas £0.04350 per kW/h plus 'standing charge' of £0.274 per DAY Gas here now priced in kW/h the same as electricity. Not sure of the conversion...

    V ZUG Textile Refresher

Interesting thread Here goes for a probably rather disjointed 'multi-reply'.... On the matter of the original thread subject, £7,000 (or thereabouts) would pay a LOT of 'professional cleaner' bills!! 'Professional cleaners' also do not occupy house space, nor use your electricity to do their...

    'Front Loaders' have a song......

Typical U.K. Launderette .... Except for the young lady undressing!!! Lots of 'REX' branded machines. Launderettes/laundromats this side of the 'pond' are full of them (Or were last time I went in one!!). Nice bit of nostalgia... :-) All best Dave T
