Broken Glass Door, Modern GE Oven

Hi John - Thanks for your prompt and complete answer to my problem, it's much appreciated. Something turned up in the mean time ... my Father is uber-delux cheap and doesn't see the need to replace the glass... he says "It runs fine without it." I pointed out that the (Interior) glass will...

Broken Glass Door, Modern GE Oven

My father's in a power wheel chair which got out of his control and ran into the oven door for a Modern GE Oven Range. The outer glass shattered. Is this something that can be repaired by myself, or should I call the repairman? Can the glass even be replaced solo, or do I have to replace the...

Kitchen Stove in Ghost & Mrs. Muir

Victorian Stove The Ghost and Mrs. Muir stove is typical of mid 19th century domestic stoves. They look odd to Americans because they typically were built to fit pre-existing "walk in" kitchen fireplaces from the 18th century. The BBC did a show a while back in which a neglected Victorian farm...

    "Hasp" Jars

Many thanks for the input on the mystery jars of yore ... and a special thanks to Launderess' for a valuable warning about the shortcomings of these jars. I will probably give them a good cleaning and use them for pasta storage. I live in the South where you have to take extra measures to keep...

    "Hasp" Jars

I have inherited a collection of "hasp" jars made in Europe. These are heavy glass jars with a hinged wire hasp for sealing the jar for food preservation. (Illustration below). I got these from my Mom, who used them for storage canisters. I'm not certain what they're called or exactly how...

Where to get Kitchen Knives sharpened

Thanks for everybody's input So... I took the coward's way out... for now. I went to Walmart and bought a few knives for about $1.50 each. I have a high-end butcher's shop and they say they'll sharpen them for free, so that comes later in the week.

    Selecting Auto Insurance Company.

Thanks for everybody's input I want to thank everybody for their input on this. I've asked for my present carrier to revise down my coverage. Now I'm going to shop against that price. And yes... I had Allstate as my first insurance carrier. I had a claim and was denied in a very insulting way...

MAYTAG E2L WASHER - CONTINOUSLY PUMPING WATER OUT

Hi Pattycakes and Welcome - I suspect your pump is stuck in the "on" position. I will look at my photo references after dinner but I think this is your machine's problem. The Maytag pump for all wringer washers has a pivot that allows the pump to rock back and forth about 1/2" maximum. When...

    Selecting Auto Insurance Company.

I want to ask about selecting an auto insurance carrier. I realize this is pretty far off topic for this website, but trying to research this subject brings in a blizzard of half-truths and advertising. I'm 60 years old with an excellent driving record. I currently have insurance, but would...

Where to get Kitchen Knives sharpened

Back in the day... When kitchen knives got dull you'd take them up to the butcher's shop at Safeway and ask the man behind the counter to sharpen them. Apparently that doesn't happen any more since I've been turned away more than once this month. Covid, don't you know. So two questions...

Who Remembers "Tiger-Tiger" Orange/Licorice Ice Cream?

I came across a photo of an extinct Ice Cream: "Tiger-Tiger" - An orange matrix streaked with black licorice by Sani-Dairy. I know nothing about this stuff, other than the graphics have a "Tony the Tiger-ish" vibe from the early 60's. Does anybody remember it? Was it regional? Did you like...

Vintage Kitchen-Aid Coffee Grinders - are they good?

An image showed up in today's "Pic of the day" slide, a Kitchen Aid coffee grinder from the 50s. I was wondering, as a grinder, are they any good? Thanks

In Search of Maytag 806 Set

Look high, look low... they are still out there... I have been looking for my 806 washer for decades now and I just turned up on the way to the scrapper last week. Finding them is a rare thing.... finding one you want to buy is another matter. Price? Distance? Mechanicals? Cosmetics? Do you...

I just a new Maytag 806 in Sunny Harvest

Thanks for the date of manufacture, here's the skinny: Ben: Thanks for the date of manufacture, this means that although it's an 806, many desirable features have been deleted - the tub lamp and the "intelligent bleach dispenser" for starters. BACKGROUND: I only paid $80 for it so I'm not...

    Historic photo - three appliances...

Mme. Launderess: The same exposed plumbing was brought up on Shorpy. The answer was given there that the building was concrete construction and that there was no "between floors" void to hide the mechanicals.
