    Salted butter or not?

Matt, must be regional I see veal in different forms here regularly. It's a staple at most supermarkets here, though not a huge section; mostly chops and scallops or as 1/3 of a "meatloaf mix" package of ground beef, veal and pork.   Chuck

    Power Outages-

Oddly, some engines have issues and others don't. Our lawn rider, snowblower and backpack blower- no issues with a start-of-season start using regular unleaded and Sta Bil. Tiller, weed-wacker, Mantis mini-tiller, generator... not easy.    I think I'll try running them dry this year, but maybe...

    X#%*&$# Squirrels!

Have you tried dried bloodmeal in your pots? I use it in my veg garden and it seems to keep the critters at bay. Cayenne powder also tends to work and is cheap but needs to be re-applied after every rain or good watering.   Chuck

    X#%*&$# Squirrels!

See this little guy? We were watching him yesterday in the same spot- where the door of the shed meet. He was obviously laboring to get in- almost looked like he was trying to open the door. From the look of the marks, he's been successful getting in and out of there, probably getting ready to...

Residential Steam Ovens part 2: Miele Combi Steam Oven

Kevin- You're gonna LOVE it! Thanks to sheer luck we have one in each kitchen. We haven't used them to their full potential, but I can tell you bagels come out great in it after using the "release burst of steam" feature! Just be sure to use the drying feature, or at least the convection...

    Power Outages-

Ethanol When I picked up the Mantis tiller from the repair shop I let the guy know my routine at the end of use for the year- add Sta Bil and run for 5 minutes or so to have it get everywhere. He said it will help, but it's best to either run the unit dry or use high-octane fuel without...

Plumbers putty vs silicone sealant kitchen sink

I always use plumber's putty for the drain flange. When I installed our new sink in the downstairs kitchen last year I used Lexel where it sits on the countertop and found it easy to work with. I suppose that could be used on the drain flange, but when you're used to one thing.... Lexel link...

Shelter At Home Cooking: Show Us Yours!

Patrick, And it's easy too! I cooked the pasta until almost done, and drained it. I cooked the chicken separately, then the veggies except the tomatoes. Sat those aside then a little oil and garlic in the pan to sweat. Then a little flour, brown slightly, and add chicken broth until a loose...

    Salted butter or not?

because it doesn't soften. Very strange! I make many batches of biscotti leading up to the holidays and only use unsalted. I leave them out when I decide today's the day and they're ready to go for me a few hours later! Chuck

    Salted butter or not?

We only buy unsalted so we can regulate the salt in whatever we're using it in. And as far as, "I think unsalted butter has little flavor," I just cooked our eggs in unsalted butter this morning and I can whole-heartedly affirm that there is a definite, positive addition to the taste. Same when...

    X#%*&$# Squirrels!

The squirrels and chipmunks around here can sometimes be pretty destructive, but they seem to have tamed it a bit. I've been putting dried blood meal in the veg garden and nothing seems to touch them save the occasional bird. This little fat fella (groundhog?) has taken up residence under the...

Speaking of Wheat Cakes, Pancakes, Waffles, Griddle Cakes

but the pancake on a well oiled griddle stuck to the pan I just made Krusteaz Buttermilk pancakes last weekend. 1.5c mix to 1c water, dash of vanilla, and about a cup of frozen wild blueberries folded in at the end. I used our trusty Sunbeam electric frying pan at 340, lightly oiled it and...

    Miele appliance professional appliances

Miele professional 36” duel fuel It's been a number of months since I worked for Miele, but I'm unaware of pro ranges; I thought "we" only had residential ranges? Two Miele groups I would never own, having torn all of them down to almost the last screw and making many many service calls- range...

Shelter At Home Cooking: Show Us Yours!

Chicken, penne rigate, portobello, tomato and basil in a light Romano sauce. Dessert was the pineapple upside-down cake shown above with a little of the pineapple liqueur I made in the spring on the side. Chuck

Shelter At Home Cooking: Show Us Yours!

Tonight's dessert out of my trusty cast-iron pan and made with fresh pineapple. I used a bit of the pineapple liqueur I made last fall in the butter/brown sugar mix instead of pineapple juice like Fannie Farmer calls for. Made one of these last weekend for company with the FF recipe for the cake...

    Putting up

It was always "canning" with my mother when we were in a suburb of Buffalo (Cheektowaga); I guess I picked up on the "putting up" after I moved to MA in 1987. She always did tomatoes, pickles, peaches, pears, some jams/jellies. Always bought by the bushel at an open-air market. I was at the...

    Putting up

Chris, "Putting up" is an older term for it- something referencing, IIRC, putting things up on a shelf for storage. Nostalgic for me. Mike- I too freeze some sauce or puree, but it's usually when I've stumbled across a big #10 can of it somewhere and need to portion it out. I like the whole...

    Power Outages-

If the outage lasts more than maybe 1/2 hour, I start the 4K watt portable generator and plug in the extensions to power the freezer, 2 fridges, internet/cable box/router, a TV, a couple of lights, etc. If it's winter, I take the cover off the 120VAC connection for the furnace, disconnect the...

    Putting up

Who here "puts up" food, and what? I've been making refrigerator pickles the last few years and they last months and months in the fridge; half-sours, dill and bread/butter. Froze grape juice from the Concords last year. San Marzano and Roma tomatoes canned for winter use. Unfortunately I lost...

FREE Miele Novotronic Pair - Golden, CO

I don't remember running across any parts I couldn't get for the W19xx series, but that was as of Nov 2019. If these machines were not oversoaped or overloaded, they have good life left in them. Most of the W19xx washers we saw fail had long histories of dumping the detergent in and cramming...
