I can't speak to the sounds Whirlpool washers make, but on the Maytag washer the pump is running in reverse while the machine is agitating. That's likely the source of the sound you're hearing.

If I were looking for a Filter Flow washer I'd go with the one seen in image six. It's an extra large capacity machine and it has a very useful mini basket setting. The mini basket would slide down into place over the straight vane agitator. My parents used this exact model for thirty years...
