I believe you should put about a quart of water in the tub before you try it out. when I got mine new, the installer did that, he said the pump would be damaged without some water in there, since yours has not been in use for some time, I think the pump retains a little water between loades.

when rotating the control knob, try putting the little indicator arrow just a little bit past the mark where it should be, I have to do that when I select heavy on the wash cycle or it will fill than just sit there.

buy the speed queen mine did not have the grease problem, but if it had I would have ran an empty load with hot water and detergent. I love my speed queen. if I had bought another brand I would have been disappointed.i raised the water level and disabled the lid switch, now I am in washer heaven.

fill level you should get to the second or third level of holes without raising the water level. I raised mine to the first row of holes.
