    Gas smell in oven

Thanks John and Mark! I did notice a small collar with two holes around the feed for the pilot. It turns and seems to cover/reveal a hole in the line for the pilot. I tried turning it, but it didn’t seem to have any effect on the pilot in either the open or closed position. There does not seem...

    Gas smell in oven

Agreed 2 Yes, the winter gas prices and the closed windows had me concerned, too, SudsMaster. The connection does seem to be a good place to start. Thank you!

    Gas smell in oven

Agreed That’s along the lines of what I was thinking, Jon. I do have a flex-line, so we’ll see if that’s contributing too. Thanks for weighing in.

    Gas smell in oven

Hello, everybody! I’m noticing a gas odor in the oven my 1952 O’Keefe & Merritt range. It is odd, because of where the odor is. The odor is only in the oven. No odor at the stove burners, no odor in the Grillevator, no odor in the storage under the Grillevator, and no odor in the broiler under...

1952 O’Keefe & Merritt Gas Range with Grillevator Oven Door Spring.

Link to Post on Replacing the Cable In case anyone is interested or if anyone finds this in the future and wonders how I replaced the cable, here is a link to the post outlining step-by-step the method I used to replace the cable. Sometimes it is hard to tell what is what, but I included many...

Replacing Oven Door Cable and Spring on 1952 O’Keefe & Merritt

*Gasp!* Typos! Whoops! I found a couple of typos. I think it still makes sense, but let me know if you have any questions or if anything is unclear.

Replacing Oven Door Cable and Spring on 1952 O’Keefe & Merritt

Spring Connection and Reassembly — The original cable has a crimped end with an eye on it. I ended up simply looping the cable over and crimping it to make a small eye with the cable itself. Whatever method you use, the cable should be 10.5” from eye to eye. — The spring section comes in two...

Replacing Oven Door Cable and Spring on 1952 O’Keefe & Merritt

Side panel covering pulley This is the little panel covering the pulley in the lower front corner of the range.

Replacing Oven Door Cable and Spring on 1952 O’Keefe & Merritt

DISASSEMBLY: There are two springs that hold the oven door shut. This is how I replaced the cable and reconnected the spring on the right side behind the panel. I couldn’t get the screws out to connect the cable to the wire hook on the left side, but as far as I know, it connects the same way...

1952 O’Keefe & Merritt Gas Range with Grillevator Oven Door Spring.

Half-Success! Thanks for the referral, Greg. I will have a look at their site. I wanted to let everyone know that I was able to replace one of the cables. I’ll make a separate post outlining what I did in case anyone else has the same issue.

1952 O’Keefe & Merritt Gas Range with Grillevator Oven Door Spring.

I’ll just have to wing it! Thanks for the referral, John, and thank you again, everyone, for taking the time to reply. I was able to find out the length of the cable from eye to eye—10.5”. I’ll get one made and also replace the missing spring from the same door. I’m still not sure where it...

1952 O’Keefe & Merritt Gas Range with Grillevator Oven Door Spring.

Lift off? I’m not sure how the doors lift off or if they do, Davey, but I do see some screws where they can be disassembled. I’m not sure if that is where the cable should attach, though.

1952 O’Keefe & Merritt Gas Range with Grillevator Oven Door Spring.

It wasn’t the spring It turns out it was the cable. I know where it connects underneath, but I’m not sure how to reattach it to the door. Anyone have info on that? Also, there was only one spring on the oven door. Should there be two as there are on the Grillevator?

1952 O’Keefe & Merritt Gas Range with Grillevator Oven Door Spring.

With a sp-CLUNK the oven door spring on my 1952 O’Keefe & Merritt Gas Range with Grillevator ceased to function. The Grillevator door has two springs, so I’m now suspicious that the first spring on the regular oven door broke before I got the range. The door did seem slightly askew before, but I...

Got a GE Monitor Top "CA" locally.... one foot in the junkyard!

Excellent! It was really enjoyable to see you get that going again. I’ve been watching your videos off and on all afternoon and evening, soaking up snippets of esoteric fridge knowledge. A friend wanted to store his monitor top in my kitchen. Maybe I should have taken him up on it!

    Service Manuals for 1952 O’Keefe & Merritt

I am looking for service manuals for my 1952 O’Keefe & Merritt Stove with Grillevator. I want to make sure everything is as it should be with the stove and sort out what is going on with the clocks. Unfortunately, I cannot find them online. Does anyone have service manual or know a source for...

Acrid Grillevator smell and Grillevator sometimes needs resetting

Thanks! Thanks everybody for your help! I’m putting on a new thermocouple now. We’ll see how it goes. I appreciate all your advice and the stories of stoves past. ☺️

Acrid Grillevator smell and Grillevator sometimes needs resetting

Weak thermocouple Thanks, John! How do I tell if the thermocouple is weak, needs servicing, or needs cleaning? I don’t see a problem with the pilot flames. They look blue and steady, and they remain on even when the burner goes out. Do they seem right to you? A friend suggested that it might...

Acrid Grillevator smell and Grillevator sometimes needs resetting

Turning off? Thanks for the ideas! There were no rodents—it had been refurbished this millennium, and I didn’t see anything when the side panels were off. I didn’t use oven cleaner when I cleaned it, just some all purpose cleaner. I did rinse it, and it had not smelled like that from the...

Acrid Grillevator smell and Grillevator sometimes needs resetting

Hello, everybody! I’m having a little problem with my 1951 O’Keefe & Merritt stove that I got this summer. I’ve noticed an acrid smell from the Grillevator when it’s on. This is not a gas smell or a burned food smell. It’s sharp. In addition, sometimes the Grillevator turns off, and I have to...
