    Comparing detergent - testing

I conducted a test today to compare UK Ariel bio powder with UK Persil non bio liquid + Vanish stain remover powder. 2 white towels were identically soiled with 11 stains - grass / chocolate ice cream / orange juice / red wine / bolognaise sauce / vegetable oil / used motor oil / chicken curry...

    Detergent Thread

Wonderful to see people giving today's products a good `putting through their paces'. Here is my current stash. Fairly modest by my standards!

Have you ever washed a feather duvet?

This is a very interesting thread. I have a ten year old down kingsize duvet which I took on it's annual jolly to the launderette a couple of days ago. I usually use Persil non bio powder for this task, as I completely get the idea that the feathers contain protein, so protease not a good...

P&G readies European invasion for Tide Pods

Interesting, look forwards to giving these a whirl - thanks Logixx. Ariel already has a unit dose product - the liquitab? Or the powder tab? What's different about the `pod' in terms of what it offers to consumers? Nick

    New Ariel Bio Tabs

I bought a box of these today and whilst the packaging is unaltered, the product has. The green `splodge' in the middle of the tablets has gone and they now resemble Daz tablets. They are less crumbly than the previous formulation which often used to end up on the kitchen floor as I tried to...

    Dishwasher detergent advice

I was using LIDL or ALDI tablets and had no issues with either. A couple of months ago we switched to having all our groceries delivered by Tesco, so I am limited to what they stock. I've been buying the current formulation of the `Everyday Value' tabs which are fine in every respect, except...

    Bosch Dishwasher

My 2011 Bosch does the alternate sprays on standard cycles, but I always use the `Express Wash' button usually along with `Eco' and sometimes the `Auto' cycle. This increases the water level and just sprays everything all at once (old skl). Cycle takes about an hour versus about 2hrs 30 normally...

    Gain "Lavender" Laundry Detergent

I have read somewhere that Lavendar is the most stimulating scent for males, so the importance of this thread should not be underestimated! I usually keep a bottle of French `Lavande des Collines' Soupline (Colgate - Palmolive) FS which is one of the originals and is still sold (the bottle I...

    Oily issues

Thanks Hi Westie 2 and Stan - thanks for your replies. I used to do the liquid pretreating thing, or Fairy Bar soap (I think this is equivalent to Ivory in the US) and I agree it makes a huge difference. However, since those days a) my volume of laundry has quadrupled and b)I'm not such a good...

    Oily issues

Greetings all. Had been noticing unclean patches on clothes, eventually worked out they were oil of various sorts (mayo / cooking oil etc) not being removed from colours at 30/40 celcius. Was using tabs at the time. Tested a range but same results with all premium stuff - Persil / Ariel...

    Favourite Fabric Softener

How interesting to see such a variety of opinion - from those who prefer no FS at all, folk who enjoy light scents and others who prefer something more powerful. I agreee that in many cases FS is not necesssary, though I tend to use a little in most washes as I find it helps the creases drop...

    Aldi's Almat `Which?' no 1 detergent.

Subtilisin is Protease I did not know that! Thank you very much for clarifying, Launderess and Mr Boilwash (though obviously on a boilwash all these enzymes are `dead in the water' anyway lol). Well, if it has 4 enzymes this instantly places it above most `mid market' powders (Surf, Bold etc)...

    Aldi's Almat `Which?' no 1 detergent.

Thank you NorthernMary. I had a nose at the website. Interestingly, the bio powder has three enzymes (amylase, lipase and another I forgot) but no protease, which is unusual. Protease is the one enzyme all of them usually have - deals with blood and other nasties. Perhaps there is an error...

    Aldi's Almat `Which?' no 1 detergent.

Hey Seamus I guess that highlights one issue with Which? testing - they don't test all aspects of a powder and obviously didn't pick up on that. Having said that, the formula is said to have changed recently to include some sort of `actilift' equiv. Maybe the colour formulation is somehow...

    Aldi's Almat `Which?' no 1 detergent.

In the latest Which? detergent test (June 2012) Aldi's Almat bio powder was rated best laundry product. It beat Ariel and Persil which followed closely behind. This follows their dishwasher tabs and manual washing up liquid scooping the same title. Aldi has also just been voted best...

    Method Laundry Detergent

Liberatordeluxe, Liquids will not perform well on mud or grass stains. You need a bio `green box' powder for these stains. This does not mean liquids like Persil S+M are rubbish, it just means they are not good at that particular stain. When used on certain other stains, bio liquids are...

    British Laundry Detergents

different Hi Rayjay No - Henkel Persil is a different product to our Persil, which is made by Unilever. I couldn't say which one performs better, I don't think there is much in it. Henkel Persil is a TOL detergent in Germany (and is marketed in other European countries under different names eg...

Finally (My Ariston) Please Read :)

Ariston4life How exciting to find your childhhod model. Always cherished. However, objectively this is by no means a dream machine. Don't let the romantic, nostalgic stuff take over. I owned this machine. The first batch of these had significant door interlock issues as reported on...
