More Shocking Confessions: What creeps YOU out?

Talking about nasty stingers, what really makes me nervous are horse flies! Wasps and bees are not really interested in you unless you disturb them and mosquitoes, well I don't notice much when they sting. But horse flies, they give me large swellings that itch for days...brrrr! And once they...

Ignore Expiration Dates and Other Common Cents

We do have it (see picture). So I must consume this one kilogram bag of salt before May 8, 2010 (and also before 14:29 on that day). And I haven't even opened it!

Ignore Expiration Dates and Other Common Cents

One should never use the expiry date as the only criterion for determining whether food is ok or not. Just look at it and smell it, that is far more important. I see sometimes vegetables that are not expired but look so bad that I will never buy them and on the other hand I have eaten many items...

Update: the red box in observation #1 is now gone. It now only appears when I click on the banner and doesn't remain when I return to the Discus-O-Mat screen from one of the forums.

    Vintage Aquarium

Ohh... stainless frames, very nice. I don't think they existed here at all.

    Vintage Aquarium

Interesting to see those metal frame fish tanks again. I've had fish tanks myself in the past, but I never saw these shiny frames. Are they stainless steel or plated? As far as I know we only had painted steel frames here and they always rusted so they had to be repainted every couple of years.

    Us wood made houses

Yes, wood can last for centuries. This house in Amsterdam was built around 1420. At that time most houses were of wood construction. Because a concentration of wooden houses such as in a city was a major risk of big fires the regulations were adapted: first side walls were prohibited, later...

    Us wood made houses

Based on the traditional design, new buildings are designed. But these are not constructed of wood. They are much larger than the traditional homes.

    Us wood made houses

I think that wooden houses are easier to build and probably cheaper as well. They are also much lighter in weight. Here in the Netherlands wooden houses are frequently found in places with swampy soils that cannot sustain the weight of stone buildings. Of course one can use piles to carry the...
