Hot dogger

Back when I was a teacher I did a unit comparing original and new versions of the same Hardy Boys book. I have a few Hardy Boys books that cover a date range from 1927 to 1970-something. The older books are definitely better. I have found older books (and even searched out a few), and...

Industrial Products from Jamestown, NY: Voting Machines

One thing I wonder about is what the investment was like to buy these machines. And whether in retrospect that investment was worth it. (One of the big issues I see is how they'd have counted the votes recorded on the paper roll. If it was done by another machine in the auditor's office, it...

    Hot dogger

I made my own for a science project in 4th grade after seeing a home made one in a textbook. How times change--I can't imagine a kid of today being allowed to do anything like this for a science project. Not even a high school student, let alone a 4th grader!

    Hot dogger

These are interesting items, and I think at one time I'd have liked having one for novelty. Although I'd never use it, since I don't eat meat (and even before, I had no interest in consuming a Class 1 carcinogen). I was interested that the people who wrote that article even tried...

Industrial Products from Jamestown, NY: Voting Machines

I recall these--or something similar--used when I was growing up. My elementary school was used as a polling place, so I remember those machines showing up every so often for an election in the late 70s/early 80s. I'm not sure when they stopped using them--1990s sometime, I think. I like the...

*Sob, Sob* My Last Windows 7 Update

Are new 32-bit desktop systems even a thing any more? I have no idea, but I almost have to doubt it.

    your Teenage lust cars...

I was hoping to see at least one person say their teenage dream car was a Model T so I wouldn't feel so ancient. The Model T might have been my dream car, but it hadn't been released yet. My dream was to have an extra horse with the...

    your Teenage lust cars...

The only car I really really, wanted was a 2010-11 E63 AMG. 6.2L na that made 519 hp. I do hope that car had at least enough power to get it up to speed for safe merging onto the freeway. LOL I had at least a short period of dreaming of a Mercedes when I was a teenager. IIRC, I saw some...

    your Teenage lust cars...

crown of boringness Oh, the Volare wasn't boring. Given the state of Chrysler then, it would have had real excitement through suspense. "Will this thing get me to KMart? Or will fall apart in a million pieces in the middle of the road, first?"

    Sanitizing a used coffee grinder

I've got a second hand coffee grinder (one of those cheap ones with a blade that spins around a cup holding coffee beans--the style one sees everywhere). I'd like to use it, but I'm wondering about if there is a way of sanitizing it without harming the coffee grinder. It is, as I say, second...

*Sob, Sob* My Last Windows 7 Update

I've not had any trouble with multiple partitions and multi boot. But I'm not using Windows, and my comptuer is old--pre UEFI. I think I'd even read a suggestion of having Windows on its own hard drive. I think one issue with Windows might be it installing its own boot loader when doing...

*Sob, Sob* My Last Windows 7 Update

I use Linux Mint, dual boot either windows or Mint and rarely ever use Windows unless there is a program or two that really require it. I've used Linux for years. It's now my primary OS. ...

*Sob, Sob* My Last Windows 7 Update

Will have to take one's chances going it alone as am not rubbishing a perfectly good desktop just to make Mr. Bill Gates even more wealthy. You probably won't be alone (although the specific reason for not upgrading might vary--a big reason I keep hearing in one computer user Facebook...

*Sob, Sob* My Last Windows 7 Update

Unknown if/when this offer expires I'm not any Windows expert, but I recall hearing of these updates. From what I've heard recently, the offer officially has long since expired. But it was apparently oddly still possible to do the free upgrade, and I think I've read articles talking about these...

Anyone got a good/authentic Hungarian Goulash recipe?

Of course, philosophically thinking... I guess anything and everything is "authentic" something... The cafeteria goulash may not be authentic for Hungary, but it could still be authentic Minnesota Prairie school cafeteria goulash! [this post was last edited: 1/10/2020-02:30]

Anyone got a good/authentic Hungarian Goulash recipe?

school cafeteria goulash I grew up on in rural Minnesota wasn’t authentic? It was probably as authentic as a diamond ring won as a carnival prize! LOL

    Mystery Vintage Television Cabinet

Interesting cabinet! I sometimes have seen gutted TV cabinets. At one point, I even toyed with the idea of getting one to use as a TV cabinet to hold a modern TV. I'd personally probably couldn't bring myself to gut an old TV, but if the cabinet is already empty, why not? Problem is...the...

"There is nothing finer, than a Stromberg-Carlson"

Another nice radio! I really like the wood work around over the speaker grill. My only complaint is that it looks like only one glass tube. I like glass tubes because of the pretty glow. Simple minds, simple pleasures, I guess... I initially thought that the tubes would have been...

    Tide Simply Plus Oxi

I've noticed the strong scent from dryer vents, too. It's sometimes surprising how noticeable the scent can be even at a good distance! I hadn't thought of pet bedding--but yes, that would be terrible for a dog with a good sense of smell to have to put up with a strong detergent scent...

    Tide Simply Plus Oxi

the fragrance was so bad I don't like the scent in this Tide Simply Plus Oxi. But it doesn't seem strong or lingering, which is a huge plus. I remember trying a sampler of Persil Original. Initially, I liked the scent--until I found that it was strong and lingered on my laundry.
